I've been using Billings for about 6 months to do all of my invoicing and project tracking, but I'm finding that while it's good at keeping track of complex projects with lots of small line items (such as a small video production), it's not well suited for more basic hourly or job based contract work (like DIT, AC, or DoP jobs).

What are you using to keep track of your billing and basic expenses (especially travel)? My laptop is a Mac, so I'd like to stick with something Mac compatible, but I'm open to using my PC if there is a killer app.

Use QuickBooks

Use QuickBooks

It's hard to beat QuickBooks for ease of use, flexibility and price. We've been using it in our video production, post, audio, talent and duplication business since it was introduced. Your accountant will be happy that you can output all the necessary info for taxes and you can track your expenses and revenue streams. I think you'd find that even your clients are using it.

I've used http://www.blinksale.com/home for about a year and a half now and really like it. It's an online billing system that allows you to email invoices and reminders- pretty simple but works for my DP jobs and camera rentals.
Try it out,
Shane.

How you guys keep track of jobs if you have rental company? Which app is best suited for that kind of job.
Sorry for the bump :)

Filemaker has some free templates but might be overkill.
I just created my own spreadsheet on Google Docs.

we have a web based solution that we used for 3 years now, rock solid and well we made it so it's very much streamlined to use for film production. The only thing is we have not made it public yet. But after reading this thread I think I got enough motivation to finnish it this weekend :)

When launched it will be on annual subscription and the price will be under 2 digits... how far under I still have to decide. Runs on all platforms and needs no installation, just sign in with username and password and you got your calendar, quotes, pricelists, invoices, statistics etc all in one. and easy enough to learn so you get going after seen ( a possibly better made than the one above) 5 minute tutorial.
