  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing Weapon Helium 8K

Any chance someone could post full length portrait image (still frame) using minimum compression on each of the three 8K cameras? Ideally with and without OLPF inplace?
Trying to evaluate photographic image across the three. Have reviewed Epic W Helium 8K at 7:1 but would like to see raw images across product line. Feel free to PM.

Hi everyone,

I need help.

I have a Weapon Helium 8K (storm trooper edition) and a Fujinon Cabrio 19-90 Mark II. I am trying to get the camera to record the lens metadata (focus, iris, and zoom) for heavy CG post-production. I have done this many times in the past with my Epic Dragon 6K- the lens does need the handgrip installed and to run a power cable to it. If everything was setup correctly, the lens data would show up on-screen (on the LCD just like canon lens data) and in redcine. Unfortunately on the Helium I can't get it to work. Is this not yet implemented in the firmware? Or am I just doing something wrong? I tried it with the lens mount power on and off...
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Curious if you can do 6:1 8K HD + 2K Prores HQ at the same time .... ?

I didn't know it could do that... though mine probably can't yet, because I don't have any of the faster minimags yet. :)

That said... I used 8K 8:1 for some group "photos" just a couple of days ago, and they looked wonderful. Well, as wonderful as it was going to get with the crappy lighting at the venue (no time/budget to light it myself, sadly).

Once I figure out how to use the image stacking options to simulate long exposures, I won't need my A7R any more...
 
Just finished a few days of green screen shooting on the helium sensor. Certainly not pushing the camera hard but it feels... different. The skin tones feel truer and have more subtlety to the hue variations. I'm certainly excited to shoot with this more.

Any news on Weapon Helium allocation? Have been waiting for mine for some time now. I have a Mg to upgrade. Are the Cf Weapons getting upgraded at least?

I ordered the Helium upgrade for my MG weapon within minutes of it being in the store and haven't heard anything. Scarlets were first then Carbons then MG, right?

100% correct. I put in my order on October 20th. I've spoken to my rep multiple times. We last spoke 10 days ago. This is what he had to say "This upgrade has not yet rolled out and not sure it will be allocated by your shoot. Do feel free to check in further for updates and I'll be glad to help." I am literally in limbo. Luckily my Scarlet Dragon is a workhorse. But, now I can't even sell my dsmc 1 components while I wait for my upgrade. The lack of definitive information is annoying but from what I've seen online the footage looks incredible. Especially the footage converted to monochrome. What I fear is being stuck in a year long queue. For a good chunk of us loans are taken out to pay for the gear. The longer the allocation wait the longer the wait to recoup costs. It makes more sense from an ROI perspective to order the camera new. I am grateful that Red does offer generous upgrade paths. I had a client jokingly say to me "I guess the 'W' in the epic logo stands for 'wait' huh?"
 
I guess one down side to being a relatively small company is that there aren't a whole lot of production lines going... Red had to halt Scarlet-w production to make a dent in the Raven queue, and now catching up on Scarlet-w preorders is holding up upgrades... sigh.

You guys must be right around the corner. I was MG upgrade to Weapon Helium and just got allocated last week. Ordered within seconds from going live.

And some light just shone around the corner :D My rep just contacted me to make the preparations for sending in my Mg for Weapon Helium upgrade. UHUUU :)

Things tend to slow down just for a bit when there's a holiday break. It's Monday and everybody has full bellies and enough family time :)
 
The upgrade option for Weapon Helium from MG wasn't immediately available at 2PM on 10/11, but I was refreshing constantly and must have been one of the first ones through a few minutes later. My rep reached out with an allocation last Wednesday AM and I should be getting the RMA to send it in at some point today.
