  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing the Nikon Zr

One small step for Nikon, one giant step for portable cinema? IDK, but I really want focus and exposure aids. Maybe firmware 1.2, I'll wait till then.

Focus Peaking, Zebra, Waveform all built in now.

Now me, I want to see GIOSCOPE in there :)

BH Q&A mentioned bluetooth TC. Not sure exactly how that would work... It would be nice if they added traffic lights, too
There's also USB and WiFi and data I/O on the accessory mount, so options to connect in different ways I suppose. Bluetooth timecode sync is a thing, I've personally never used it, but Atomos, Tentacle and others all make bluetooth timecode products. USB is also a thing and Tentacle makes USB TC products, including USB TC dongles that sync with bluetooth TC systems.

I wounder how 12bit will work in r3d. TC is also a big question mark. But for that price it's a really amaizing camera and rolling shutter seems really impressively. good. How long does the EN-EL15c battery power the camera?
Will be just fine... 12bit is 4096 levels of gradation and they don't have to be linear. Most of us are still finishing in 10bit and most endpoint display systems are still 8bit.

I'm also curious about the battery life.

To bad they didn't do a flip monitor aka a7s3...
You mean like that ?

Yes!!! I just saw it. Thanks

Does anyone have any R3D from that camera (nature shots) to play with? I wounder if the sensor has the same texture as the RED cameras.

I doubt it. Nikon NDA’d everyone who reviewed the camera and from what I understand they had a Nikon rep accompanying the camera… I pre ordered the camera at 430a et and I think the queue started at 300a so I probably will be one of the first to get the camera. I’m having doubts but if I do decide to keep it I’ll upload some r3d files…

There is sample footage on the Nikon website, but it won't open in Redcine-x ... or Resolve 20.0 - might have to update to 20.2. Total red noob, so maybe someone here knows how to open it?

Well... I've been playing around with those Zr R3D's and I'm really impressed. It's a new (and proud) addition to the RED family and we need to give the Zr a spot in the REDUSER camera lineup in the RED cameras page.

Even if the colors from Raptor and Komodo-X are closer it's quite easy to match the Zr to his brothers. The noise is best with the Raptor (prehaps due to more resolution) and is also nicer (very filmlike) on the Raptor but I find the Zr has better noise rendition and has a crispier image than Komodo-X. Is it due to lower OLPF stregth and will it introduce aliasing, I didn't see any yet) .
I see a bit of noise compression artefact in the Zr noise but when pixelpeeping x500%. Higher data rate (less compression) would help this, not sure it's capable of higher bitrates?

It's a killer camera and will replace my a7s3, Fx3 and perhaps also my Komodo-X if I find a way to rig it for shoulder work.

How is the DR? The result of Undone”s tests weren’t too impressive

Zr's sensor, which is Z6iii sensor, has the lowest DR among all comparable cameras, but all comparable cameras has worse read out speed, some way worse, except FX3, which is half in megapixels. Speed is not free, and thats why RED global shutter sensors were game changer.

A Hong Kong based full review, including still photography side of the camera.

What will really make this is if they add in more Red-centric exposure tools, like the traffic lights and histogram etc. Also add in true 24.00p as a project framerate option, anamorphic lens desqueeze in camera and perhaps in the longer run, make that top photo/video switch turn the video side more into a video focused menu and display with the aforementioned exposure tools and Red camera display around the image border like we have on the DSMC3 cameras etc. But definitely an insta-buy for me!

Which brings up the question: will Nikon bring out the cripple hammer to protect their higher end cameras? Hope not.

They completely transformed their Z9/Z8 with firmware updates. We have to wait to see if they do the same for a $2k camera.
