  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing the New OConnor O-Box WM Mattebox

I tested on a lens projctor so that I was not limited by any camera and could look at the announced EPIC coverage many months before the camera was available to me.

You need to shove the lens in there a little further but I saw clean coverage. I think you may be reduced to only one filter tray but I'll have to check my notes.

Now that sensor sizes are getting bigger than traditional S35, there's definitely going to be a need for testing and feedback with these new formats before everyone can start getting a "feel" for what filters cover what sorts of lenses.

In any case, the first thing to do is to take the filter stack you want to use and test that for vignetting without a mattebox. Just hold the stack in front of the lens or have someone do it for you while you look through. If the filter edges are in frame, the mattebox design can't help you -- the filters are then simply too many, too small or both.

I really want to buy one of these ASAP. Where is the best place to get them? Everywhere is out of stock and i've been waiting for them to come in. Does anyone have a used one they might be willing to part with? :-)

Hi Mitch, what do I have to get to use the o-box with duclos zeiss ? They have a 80mm front diameter. Is it possible ?
Thanks a lot.

Hi Philipe,

Mitch is enjoying a well deserved vacation so I'll go ahead and answer this:

The O-Box can be clamped directly onto the lens using Clamp Ring 150-80mm C1243-1126.

The O-Box can also be rod supported and using Bellows Ring 150-114mm (threaded) C1243-1117 then stepped down to 80mm using Reduction Ring 114-80mm C1243-2173 (this configuration also allows for the use of an additional 138mm round filter in the bellows which can be rotated 360 degrees.)

Hi Eric, thanks a lot for the quick reply ! Do you know when the box, side flags and brackets and the bellows and reduction ring are going to be in stock ?
Going to the US early september and really need to buy those .
Thanks again.

Eric, do you guys have a 142 ring yet for the 17-50? or the 300mm?

thanks

We are working to clear all the back-orders...the responce to this new mattebox was overwhelming! I suggest you order with one of the dealers ASAP to hold your place in line. I understand the delivery frustration but the product once in hand is worth the wait.

These rings should be finished this week (along with a 134mm). Once we complete the QC an official announcement will go out with the order detals. The good news is they will be immeadiatly available from stock for those people who already have O-Boxes.

Great news. Put my order in for a o-box. Can't wait to get it. Keep up the good work.

I own the O grips and use them all the time., absolutely fantastic. I haven't invested in the O box yet, as I continue to use Grad filters extensively, both 5x5 and 4x5. One thing I am plagued by is the occurrence specular highlights in the frame causing multiple reflections because the filter stages are not flat to the lens front. Are there any matte boxes that allow you to tilt the orientation of the front of the matte box to remove these double reflections? I will usually do it by opening the swing away slightly. Should this be happening, or is it simply a mis-aligned matte box. I am wondering if the sturdiness of the O Box may eliminate this.

Oh Robb you do bring back memories! Rodney Charters was the last "filter tilter" with this request and our solution did not make him smile.

The O-Box (could) but cannot do this. Check out some of the older Panavision boxes if you really want this feature.

Also wonderin when the 17-50 ring for the Obox will ship.

Thanks,

Thanks,

Note: the order numbers have been corrected

Two new rings have been tested, are in stock and ready to ship! These are:

C1243-2183 Clamp Ring 150-143mm Fits RED Pro 17-50, 18-85 Lenses

C1243-2184 Clamp Ring 150-134mm Fits ARRI/ Fujinon Alura Lenses

These are double duty rings, i.e. they can be used as clamp rings without rod support or as light trap rings with rod support.

Hi, What's the height needed to centre a lens in the obox using 15mm rods? So vertical distance from rod to centre of matte box opening? Thanks, Jon

The O-Box uses industry standard height and centering. 85mm from lens center to LW 15mm rod centering in height. 60mm center to center spacing between rods.

Are there any plans for a 5.65x5.65 filter frames for grads, etc...? Or might any third party filter frames work in the o-box?
