  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing new wide zoom!!!!

Ok, so The PL mount sounds great but a rehousing could also be for the purpose of increasing the focus throw right?

Why stop at the mount? Is it very hard to include the gearing in a bigger housing? A little bigger size wouldn't be much of an issue and people would pay quite a bit for such a lens. Maybe also space out the rings a bit while you are at it.

Roberto,
We did not stop at just putting a pl mount on the lens. first of all this lens was not a manual lens and now it is. There is full iris function and the focus is reversed for the proper motion picture direction. We are also including a motor bracket at 12 oclock. I have been repairing and modifying lenses for over 30 years I am a tool - die maker and have a full machine shop, and this lens 14-24mm and the 24-70 mm are the absolute sharpest two lenses I have ever seen. The sharpness and resolution justified me to choose these two lenses.

^ Cool, then I do hope he makes the pull longer

Roberto,
Sorry but this is the final design of the focus, however the sharpness of this lens will justify the short travel of the focus. Before this lens was converted there was next to non travel in the focus. Fortunately I was able to reverse the focus direction and have a readable focus scale.

This is a very politcal question.
I think I'll reserve judgment until Stuart delivers a final product.
Even then, I'm sure his work will speak for itself.
All I will say is that I consider the input of the REDUSER community quite valuable as the members are not only knowledgeable and diverse, but they are the future of the film industry. It would be silly to overlook the input and requests of such a community.

Matt,
Thank you, thats the way it should be

This looks great Stuart! Can't wait to see it in the wild. I talked it up to the Koerner people today so maybe you can catch Micheal's ear at NAB and get one in the NW.

OK, cool... I guess with a FF and since it is "only" 2.8 and 24mm at the long end you could manage quite well... I just have nightmares from dozens of great takes RUINED while working with Nikon Manuals that had scales like the one on the picture. HOWEVER, those were at f1.2, f1.4, f2.0, and they were mostly when using the 35mm, and 50mm. I am still traumatized. :crying:

That is really cool that you reversed the throw. I am sure many ACs will thank you. What is the deal with the motor thing you mentioned? I don't follow.

I would guess the big question now will be Price.

Thanks for all your answers!

I have the original Nikon mount version of this lens, and I have to say all the hype about it is true. It's quite simply one of the sharpest, aberration free lenses I've ever used.

Here is a Flickr gallery* from my first day with it on a D700:

*vignetting added for effect, not much on the RAW images.

Mike,
pic look great thank you
Stuart

Hey Mike, those look great. Could you take a moment to explain to me about abberations and/or distortion. Looking at those I see that they are very clean, but I still notice a bit of "distortion" though I don't know what to call it... I know all to little to understand what could be expected at the wide end and what is impossible due to the laws of optics.

I guess at wide angles things will look a bit weird since they are so far from the way our eye sees. The picture of the girl looking up sitting by the laptop is a good example of what I am asking about. But that should be considered the "look" of a wide angle lens and not a "problem" with the lens in question, correct?
