  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing Epic-W 8K

We did a low light test from ISO 400 up to 12800.
Shot with the Standard, Low Light and also the Skin Tone-Highlight OLPF.

The video is filmed 8K HD at 6:1 with REDWideGamutRGB and REDgamma4.
Uploaded straight to YouTube in 8K and without any Colorgrading.
Update with Helium Color Science will follow!

Thanks Marco for your great test.

I'm still waiting for the new color science as there are some significant green tint in the higher iso than in the lower iso settings. Already seen in the Helium Xyla test chart.

See you.

Pat

Guys,

Quick question for the forum... why would anyone choose the "Weapon Dragon 6k" over the "Epic-W Helium 8k"?

It seems to me that the Epic-W Helium is a better camera (newer sensor, higher res), yet the upgrade is way cheaper than getting a Weapon... with the old sensor. Am I missing something?

We are a little lost here and trying to decide what's the best course of action. 14,500 for Helium on Epic-W ... or... 34,500 for Weapon.... Dragon?

Hey Eric,

There's a thread to follow here where people are listing their pro's and cons. It's a pretty informative read if you haven't seen it yet. But, Epic-W's frame rate limitation for full frame is what is leaving people room for concern. To get the same framerates at dragon on helium you have to crop in on the sensor and a lot of people find that to be too much. It's subjective I suppose. Also the highlight clipping on the Helium is a bit off compared to dragon, but it's still manageable with good ND. I've been shooting with the helium for the last week and man it's a beast. I love the colors, I love the noise pattern. 2500 on STHO still looks really nice. I was never able to get that after sunset with my dragon. But again, it's all subjective. Hope this helps.

what he said, if you are going to be shooting a lot of slow motion the weapon dragon is afar superior as you dont have to crop into the already smaller sensor.

About to do my Scarlet-W to Epic-W upgrade as we have until Dec 31st for the Jarred special.

I was an early Scarlet-W order so I've had my camera since last May. For other early S-W owners (or anyone who has upgraded lately), is the turnaround pretty quick or am I in for a long wait?

Thanks for any info.

Would I be right in thinking I've missed all cutoff points and there is no longer any incentive to buy someone's Scarlet-MX and transfer ownership to get any sort of discount on the Epic-W?

Have jobs in Jan but it seems the Scarlet-W would be late getting here and the Epic-W is just that bit out of my price range to buy outright. Possibly some sort of Scepic-W in-between model required :)

October 11th 2016 was the cutoff point for eligibility as a registered RED camera owner.

https://support.red.com/hc/en-us/articles/228235748

"...Eligibility

Owners of the RED cameras listed below are eligible for RED Owner Pricing if they either purchased directly from RED, completed the Transfer of Ownership process, or submitted a Camera Registration Form before October 11th, 2016.

Customers who have an invoiced deposit for a SCARLET-W 5K or RED RAVEN 4.5K - either directly through RED or an Authorized RED Dealer - before October 11th, 2016 are also eligible for RED Owner Pricing..."

I think your only way to access the discounts would be for you to find a current RED owner wiling to go through the discounted upgrade process before the Dec 31st deadline and then have them transfer ownership of the camera to you when it's complete.

Just landed...

Can't wait to put her through her paces!

Hi everyone! Been reading Reduser for a few months now (since July when I originally placed a Scarlet-W pre-order), and now I have a Red camera, I've finally joined this awesome community!

I'm originally a photographer coming from a Canon 6D, but increasingly lately my jobs have been a mix of both stills and video, and I've been hitting the 6D's limits, specifically when it came to video. To accommodate my future projects, I just got my first ever Red - the Epic-W! To me, the ultimate convergence of stills and video. 35MP for stills, 8K for video. Amazing specs.

Brought it to Zion - here's a still extracted from the top of Canyon Overlook Trail, a quick and dirty edit in RCX (applied IPP2 Preview LUT and some curves) and downscaled to 4K - the Canon 16-35 2.8L II isn't the sharpest lens (especially around the edges) but when scaled down it negates the lack of sharpness and I think it looks great. I think this would print out quite nicely.

Also, shout-out to Hunter Delaney for making this happen!

One thing that just stunned me was the DR - I was able to shoot this scene with just a Tiffen Variable ND and exposed so none of the goal posts or traffic lights lit up - it's amazing how much sky details were retained when I brought the scene exposure down. With the 6D, even when shooting RAW, the sky would have blown out and I would not have been able to recover any of the highlights due to the comparative lack of DR. Wow.

Dear friends,
Happy new year!

Because of the noise fan, has anybody used a higher adaptive sensor temp then 38 degrees Celsius default? I asked Red but no answer yet, how high we can safely set the sensor temperature, so the fan can be on a lower speed!

Hi Eric, i have to do a firmware upgrade tomorrow and try the 47C. Best regards Robert

Received ours on the 28th. Loving this thing! Don't want to put it down. Even with the standard OLPF I was getting usable images at 5000 ISO. It's insane!

Here is a little video I put together of footage from our first weekend with the camera:

Thanks for posting Robert. Could you post a link to 15 seconds of raw footage?
