  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Introducing Epic-W 8K

512GB. Yes it can do 6:1 RAW. But when you add ProRes, it has to go to 9:1. I'm just glad it can.

Ok cool. Wow I'm just happy it'll do side-by-side like that. Incredibly exciting! Thanks for keeping us in the loop Andy...not sure I'll be on RU at all in the hours/days after I receive. I will report back though with thoughts and some R3Ds for everyone.

Wow people are getting cameras already! And Able Cine cant tell me anything. Bummer!

John, You should've been contacted by our NY office by now, but if not please shoot me an email at Bbyrne (at) AbelCine (dot) com and I will look in to it for you! I promise we won't leave anyone behind during this excitement!

i do not need to shoot 8K Raw, I need to deliver Raw (try exposing moving diamonds without clipping or underexposure) in 4-6K

I think my best setting would be 6K as my standard setup (which is still digestible for most productions) and than living with a 162% zoom (6k to 4k 1.66/1.02) if I switch to 120fps

finger on the epic-w trigger???

Martin I am a still life shooter as well. When I am that closer into my subject, as long as my files are clean, crop factor has never been an issue for me. Also people always turn to macro lens, but as a shooter who shoots a lot of still life, i have no problem going to a wide lens with a tube.
I can totally live with it i think.

Just wanted to confirm if what my rep said is correct about going through dealers:

-If you currently own a Scarlet-W and are looking to upgrade, you can't go through the dealer to get an Epic-W
-If you paid for the Scarlet-W deposit through RED, it would have to be done through RED, not the dealer (Is this correct?)
-If you paid for the Scarlet-W deposit through the dealer you can pick up their Epic-W with the discounted price, all else you have to pay full price for an Epic-W through dealer

Andy? Already an export ready:)?

I REALLY wanted to grab some quick footage for y'all, but because of Atlanta traffic, I had to pick up my goods and go. Won't be home for 3 more hrs. Hopefully a clip or two by tomorrow morn. I sincerely apologize.

Can't wait!

hi Kazu
the crop factor as such is not a problem if I set up a shoot with the crop. Its difficult if I have to reframe after movements and lights have been set (because a client wants higher fps, or we need more frames for stabilisation in post)
There is of course a solution... my go-to product lens is the 90mm Schneider Pc-Ts, I might just need to buy the matching 50mm to take care of the crop - but thats more $$$

- Don't forget that SCARLET-W depositors (pre today) should* get allocated before people already with cam. I say "should" because, while dealers have guidance and rules from us, they are not part of RED so it may be a little more Wild West

- Yes. Dealer would have no record of your deposit with us.

- I think the answer is yes. Don't understand the second part, really.

In regards to the ProRes, If I shoot at 8K FOV, 2K ProRes, no R3D, can we achieve 120 fps? Or even if we are not capturing R3D's, must we still scale down to 6K FOV and lower for the higher frame rates?

Yes 8K 2K proress is 120fps

Jarred, Brent,
Thanks for the upgrade opportunity, dream came true again:)

What are you guys going to do with al the red ones and dsmc 1 body's? Something cool? Really curious.

from the specs I did not understand it this way either.
yes 4k prores 442 from the whole 8k sensor at 30fps (well 29,970 but not sure
if we can really get 120fps without any crop/windowing. Is that confirmed anywhere (sorry Jaimy, not
doubting you just confirming...)

Now I'm doubting too:P

Almost positive this is false. Jaimy, where did you get this confirmed?

The 8K FPS limit is most likely limited my vertical sensor refresh (as with all CMOS sensors) and not datarate. In fact one of Jarred's earlier posts states that explicitly.

I'm eating dinner at Steak n Shake waiting for a massive traffic. jam to go away. Maybe I'll bring the Epic-W in, check that ProRes spec and shoot a clip of my diet coke.

Is there a form that we need to fill out for the finance option? If so, can it be posted here? Maybe it'll alleviate some load from the sales people?

Maybe shoot the diet coke against the bright windows to push the DR limits?
