  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Internal ND filter for EPIC/SCARLET

I really don't understand the want for a behind the lens ND filter setup similar to what was developed for the Alexa, especially in what some of you are calling run-n-gun situations. Any time you need a different strength ND, you need to pull the lens to change it out. Want to shoot without ND filtration, then you need to pull the lens and insert the clear glass. Why not use a matte box with slide-in filters and avoid having to pull the lens with each filter change?

I honestly doubt this will ever materialize. It would cannibalize Reds own extremely badass $5000 motion mounts...

So you are always losing light if you have the motion mount on? How much?

Thanks. Wow, that's insane. It doesn't seem that Red haven't mentioned that on the site. That's kinda a big factor for most people.

And it seemed like such a great solution for rolling shutter.

Hi!

Is something like this possible for Epic?

http://www.fdtimes.com/2013/04/03/arri-alexa-internal-filter-module/

Especially with the Dragon coming up (2000 ISO!!!)

I think a single ND filter would suffice. Say ND0.9 or ND1.2

Use it in daytime to effectively reduce the ISO of the camera (in a way).
Take it off at night to go back to 2000.

Simple. A single internal ND filter would make a world of difference. No more crazy external NDs when shooting during the day. A regular ND set (0.3, 0.6 and 0.9) + a regular Hot Mirror.

Possible?

Mike

Hands up for this !

After testing the Motion Mount, sadly its not for me. Not saying anything is wrong with it. It does all that's promised... Nice bit of kit.

But it has limitations when shooting wide open... And I tend to shoot wide open apertures a lot. Hence why a drop in 1.2 IR would be perfect for me.

Why can't they just put in a rotating wheel and be done, if it makes the camera 1/3 bigger who cares, such a simple and USEFUL addition

Now with usable ISO 250 to ISO 2000... is there a need anymore for an internal ND?

I was a supporter of this idea since I didn't like two things about Epic: high ND filtration (ND1.5 and up), and Hot Mirror filters.

Now, with ISO250, I think a regular ND set (.3 to 1.2) without any IR filtration would be good for all shooting situations?

Mark, what do you think?
