So I watched the latest Hobbit BTS vid and two things jumped out at me....

1. Peter Jackson has scripted The Silmarillion into a film series. Most likely it will be the stuff leading up to LOTR and not the first part of it, which doesn't have Elves, Dwarves, and the like.

2. Peter Jackson apparently has his mits on the new Star Wars film series outlines as one of them - the one coming after the JJ helmed episode - was spotted in his junk drawer.

Any thoughts? Wouldn't it be a coup for RED to be used on Star Wars?

My father took me to see star wars in the theaters... I was 3 months old.... he said i stared at the screen the entire time... i remember seeing empire strikes back in the theaters.... return of the jedi, we had a bootleg copy on a beta deck.... while it was in theaters (my dad was stationed overseas)...

i learned to read on the official star wars movie books for children....

I have extremely passionate opinions regarding the handling of the recent trilogy... i was actually excited to learn that there would be a new trilogy released... a chance at redemption... and now that it might be filmed on a Red.... well.. the future of the galaxy so far, far away... looks much brighter.... at least 18 stops brighter to be exact... :)

RED Leader... stay on target!

If the new series is shot on anything OTHER than 4K cameras it will be a huge disgrace.

They're in pre-production right now and a good distance from filming, but I'm pretty much with Tom on this one. Star Wars in general has paved the way. At this point these should be a 4K capture/finish.

We'll see what's going on. A lot of very busy movement around town at the moment regarding the first new one out of the gate.

If they shoot this 1080p or 2K or 2.8K, that should set Disney Corp up for a class-action lawsuit from shareholders for willful negligence. It will drastically cut in to profits from 4K content sales for decades to come.

That's a bit of a distortion!

I assume they're shooting anamorphic. It's J J Abrams, remember?

The difference between
"Alexa Plus - 2880x2160 uncompressed with good latitude and color that's OK but worse than film"
and
"RED Epic - 3226 x 2700 compressed with not as good latitude and color that's worse than film"

Is pretty small.

If you really want to future-proof:
- shoot on that 8K experimental camera
- not just stereo but with an array capturing the whole lightfield so it's ready for glasses-free holographic 3D
- and you'll want decent color rendition so RED is clearly out.

In this silicon-based camera world, you can't "future-proof" from a technical perspective. Just get it good enough - and there are plenty of solutions to achieve that.

Worrying about Epic vs Alexa is like sitting in the early 2000s arguing which 6-megapixel Canon or Nikon DSLR is going to make future-proof images. It's not going to make a difference! Both will be fine! Shoot your movie on either one!

I have a good feeling its gonna be shot 6 or 8k

=)

By the time this starts filming Red Dragon and likely Arri's next camera will both be available. Not to mention others as well.

First off - both of those shots were extremely conveniently framed to show those scripts. I'm calling April Fools/otherwise gag on them (the video aired to the public April 2nd, I think).

I could almost believe the Silmarillion one - at least in that Peter Jackson may have scripted something out. But Christopher Tolkien still owns the rights to The Silmarillion, and he hates the LOTR film franchise with a passion (though he hasn't watched any of the films). I find it unlikely he'd sell the rights to Jackson, or anybody else.

As for Star Wars (Jackson aside), JJ Abrams has expressed some level of satisfaction with RED in the past (i.e. Super 8 pickups), but I think he loves anamorphic/film too much to jump ship for principle photography on a feature.

don't get too curmudgeonly on us bruce, cause you make some good points. i've seen some beautiful images... we are where we are in space and time. but it definitely doesn't matter what you shoot the thing on if the story sucks as bad as the last three.

4k as "future proofed" is going to be laughable in 10 years. Whether it's 3k or 4k will be irrelevant. It would be like saying that a silent film's subtitle cards's print wasn't good enough before the advent of sound.

Also Star Wars was one of the last films released in HD and it sold just fine.

4k is about the best we can finish anything at right now, and I for one think it's an awesome experience that I look forward to (when used appropriately in a good story) having more often quite soon. I don't see any reason but to do the best we can with what we've got. If you've got a quality production it deserves a quality picture. That doesn't mean you can't watch a 240p video on youtube and have a great experience... but let's be reasonable.

I had heard that Trek 2 was going to be shot on RED until Chris Nolan talked JJ into shooting it on film. I can't remember where I heard that, so take it with a grain of salt.

The studios wanted JJ to shoot digital because it was going to be shot stereo. JJ never wanted to shoot digital and certainly didn't want to shoot stereo. Back to the old school way of converting to stereo in post it went.

Sure. I simply had two thoughts. I think you actually agree with both of them:

1. Tom goes a little overboard saying that if they shot Star Wars in 2.8K, shareholders should sue Disney for negligence. Alexa "2.8K" 4:3 anamorphic is pretty darn close to Epic "5K" anamorphic.

2. Shooting 4K or 5K or whatever and considering yourself "automatically future-proof" is like worrying about whether to shoot on a 5 megapixel Nikon DSLR or a 7 megapixel Canon DSLR in 2002. It's not going to make much of a difference. I would go for color rendition, latitude and ease of use. The technology is going to advance way beyond what you're shooting on. As you point out - eg Dragon and Arri's next cameras!

Haha, yeah!

LOL, well, shooting anamorphic on Alexa is certainly better than shooting spherical on Alexa.

IMO, shooting major Hollywood films at 1080p, 2K or spherical Alexa 2.8K from now on should = lawsuit. :smash:

Hehehe. Quote of the day :)
