The primary advantage to RED is REDCODE. Compressed RAW at over 23.976 fps. This is a core invention of RED that's full effects have not been seen yet.

The secondary advantage of RED is our sensor program. Some could argue that this is number one.

Mysterium "Monstro" is a sensor program that pushes the envelope past anything on the horizon. It will go into Epic, and another camera aimed squarely at the DSLR market. Epic ships with Mysterium-X and has a free upgrade to Monstro.

Scarlet has been talked about extensively. It is a 3K, 120fps camera with a built-in 8X zoom that starts at 28mm (full frame still 35mm) wide angle. The T-stop will be "at least" as published.

We have a couple of other "tricks up our sleeves". The important message is that we are just getting started.

Jim, you're nuts, you know that. Absolutely bonkers.

We wouldn't have it any other way.

And another camera to compete against current DSLRs? A camera that's not Scarlet?

Can't wait to hear more!

Whoa!

'And he wept, for there were no more worlds to conquer'

I think Jim and Alexander had the same mentality :-).

DSLR is kind of a step back eh? Unless...given the news of the Nikon D90, you intend to make a hybrid that'll be both a competant DSLR and a good 1080p camera in one! Gosh this is going to be fun!

I think you sort of gave away your high expectations when you announced Red Ranch. It would be very interesting to know what you envision ten years from now, but that would be telling... wouldn't it.

Future cameras will shoot ultra-high resolution stills and motion... :-)

I just can't see the market. I'm sure there is one, but I just can't wrap my head around it.

afterthought: remembering back how Michael Phelps won by 1/100th of a second, I guess I CAN see a need for a full screen hand some 200 nanometers ahead of the second place finisher.:)

Interesting. I think if this gets to a 2.0, you will have a major homerun. You'll probably hit one anyway, but the 2.8 would seem to make low light a bit challenging, and I've talked to a lot of people who plan on using the camera in low light. Although, I'm sure you guys have some things up your sleeves.

Looking forward to hearing about all of the new development over the next few months.

Are you talking about the market for a still/movie camera?

I can definitely see a market for this. And I have a feeling Red is going to be right at the forefront of it. I've ben pretty impressed with the stills I've been able to pull from Red One. Sounds like it's going to get a whole lot better in the future. Can't wait.

I can better understand the viability of an ultra-high resolution still camera, but I just don't know how more resolution at this stage of viewing is going to justify the extra expense for having that higher resolution moving image. 5k sounds pretty cutting edge to me. Do we really WANT to see the edge of a pore on an actor's skin?

We see the future very clearly... trust us (he said)...

That's all the reassurance I needed. I can now get some sleep. Thank you Mr. Sandman:)

Think IMAX.

Silicon Imaging has compressed RAW too. But they're not doing as well.

Your primary advantage is that you guys provide astounding value for money. Plus it's just fantastic that you guys are so hungry, and care so much, and engage with customers in an unprecedented open way. You guys really love your customers and we love you back. Because of that we are prepared to jump through Apple-shaped hoops.

I understand you guys think REDCODE is your greatest asset. But personally I think that if you released the file format spec, opened up the workflow, and stopped stressing out about it, you'd be even further ahead of the competition.

Just my 2c!

I want in!

I want in!

Jim,

If you serious about getting into the DSLR market I want in! I don't care if I start as the company car washer, but I want in on the development of a camera that will put a serious scare into Nikon and Canon in the DSLR market. No other company, not even all mighty (at least in their own mind) Sony, could break into that two man race the way RED and you can.

Silicon Imaging had compressed RAW after we announced REDCODE. Just to make things clear. The idea of on camera compressed RAW for motion was a RED invention... and turning out to be one of our best.

I'm not sure what you are referring to about opening up the workflow. Adobe support, Quantel support, Cineform, and Avid support along with many others have begun with the release of the SDK. What is it you are really saying? The only heartburn we get is from posts like yours.
