  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Improper Shutdown Error Message:

Hang on. I thought momentary press of side red button went into Record, and long press eventually prompted controlled shut down (with Shutting Down message). So how can we hold the button down TOO long?

A momentary press will toggle record.
A press of about 2 seconds will start a software shutdown (you will see the "SHUTTING DOWN..." screen).
A press of about 5 seconds will trigger the hard shutdown.

So, you will want to press until you see the "SHUTTING DOWN..". message and then let go.

If you are experiencing this problem, please open a support ticket and send in a log file. Please mention that I want to look at the log file so the support team will forward it on to me.

For those using the DSMC Side Handle I highly recommend mapping one of the buttons to shutdown. Big time saver and battery saver.

Trent, what exactly does the hard shutdown do?

The hardware will kill power to the brain (without any firmware intervention). It is a safe-guard so you can still shutdown the camera (without pulling power) if the camera firmware is crashed/hung. In this case you will get the "improper shutdown" message since the firmware was not able to do its normal shutdown book-keeping and cleanup.

Note: one thing the camera does on shutdown is properly eject the media - so it is always preferred to perform a clean shutdown rather than just pulling the plug or performing a hard shutdown.

You guys should not be seeing this error message unless you pull power or hold the power button down too long (which will activate the hard power off). If you are consistently seeing this when powering down through the menus I'd like to see some log files.

Good to know, probabaly just holding it down too long.

I was getting those messages too until I figured out I was pressing the button too long.

Yeah that must have been the case, was unaware of 'Hard Shutdown' until now. In going through the menus this message has appeared to gone away. Was worried at first, glad to see I'm not the only one..

Hello,

Just had a question, I am getting prompted with "You shutdown the camera improperly" message when I boot the camera up after previously shutting down correctly.
Wondering what the case may be, if it is a firmware, or potentially another issue that some of you may have run into. Not entirely sure, the camera is only two weeks old.

Same... Get it all the time.

Have know idea why its says that. ?

I just hold the off button off.. the camera turns off.. Next time I turn it on.. that message appears. ?
3 cameras... they do all the same.

Whats the trick to turning the camera off...?

Do you get the message if you power down through the menus?

My guess is that you are holding the power off button down too long and the hard shutdown is kicking in. You can let go of the power button as soon as you see the "Shutting Down..." message on the UI.

I had this problem with one of my housings where the spring was too short and the button was holding down, easily fixed.

Trent can you guys make the firmware so the message goes away after 10 seconds or so? Even though we fixed the main problem, I'm concerned that if it ever happens through just operator error we can't get rid of it without opening the housing.

We will take it into consideration. The reason for initially not making it time out is to ensure that the operator sees the message and understands the possible severity of not shutting down the camera properly.

I've had that problem on one camera occasionally when shutting down using the record button. By using the Redmote shutdown, never a problem.

I'd second that from Michael, if the message stays up a couple min. then goes off screen that should be long enough for someone to know what happened on the hard shutdown. This would be best I think. Then by pressing record again it would allow up to keep working.

Thanks for considering this.

I always press the battery percentage text on the LCD touchscreen and it pops up with the shutdown option (saves one step from menu).

Just tried that. Works almost instantaneously. Thanks for the tip Joseph.

Cheers.. will check now.

well to be honest i do the same "turn-off" on my M and X and it doesnt happen on the X and always on the M, but perhaps the upgrade to the M will solve it...quien sabe?
