  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Lets hope the 'Modular Mac Pro' doesn't go the way of the '11 Mac Mini - and that it actually sees the light of day.
If Apple are looking to design something with the 'highest throughput' - heat won't be the limitation, but rather the ability for existing software to leverage hardware components.
Perhaps Apple have found that tuning software with Metal 2 in the iMac Pro allow the CPU to tick over while the GPU can (far more) efficiently process the data (in the new array structure format)?

I don't think Apple will release the MMP until there is sizeable jump in the other parts of the system where the bottlenecks lie.
Intel have got its fingers burnt holding back the bandwidth of its H/W .. which has caused it to bring forward its plans for SSF (scalable system frameworks) - but that is years away.
In the mean time - we have companies like Cray using very high bandwidth (and cost effective) chips form Cavium based the ARM architecture.

The graphs that show that Apple makes 9% of its revenue from iPads sales and 9% from Mac sales don't show that the CPU and GPU chunks of the Mac sales greatly reduce Apples profit share.
Apple's A11 CPU cores (Monsoon) are already impressive enough to consider replacing a Xeon core.
On the next TSMC process (7nm) - Could Apple consider replacing an $8000 top end XEON with a 64 core home grown core?
With Apple fully designing their own GPUs in lock-step with Metal, Mac OS could benefit from the sort of hardware acceleration they have build into the A11 Bionic chip.

Perhaps Apples interest in high end Mac Sales will return when they can fill out the stack with with their own CPU and GPU?
