  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I'm scared to buy an iphone 4

I blame all reception issues on ATT, worse company I have ever signed a contract with.

I agree.

The thing I can't understand is, if AT&T knows they are a running joke and their service is incredibly horrendous, why don't they fix the problem??

Weird. I hear opinions that are polar opposite every day. Makes me wonder if only certain phones are affected...
Does Apple have a return policy on the iphone 4 ?

This is what I'm thinking. I'm seriously wondering if there are not QC issues with Apple pushing out so many phones so fast. We have seen reports of issues such as visible discoloration of the LCD due to "undried adhesives" and reception issues. I think many of the reception issues are still based on area, just as the ongoing call quality issue is. Calls here on the iPhones (2G, 3G, i4) all sound great. Last two times I was in LA, my phone sounded like crap. As if the network was operating the calls at a much lower bit rate.

Of what I have seen in this thread -- someone needing to use their headset is obviously a problem with THAT PHONE, he should have it replaced. My wife upgraded her original iPhone to an iPhone4. on June 23, ordered via AT&T. It works great. Only places we have experienced signal loss, my 3GS will lose signal as well when I'm there too. Yes, the bars can drop a bit if we span the gap in the antennas, but it hasn't caused a dropped call except in situations where signal strength was really low to begin with. And even then has not been a problem. Definitely not even a concern at all with the bumper or a case on it, which most people use anyway. But even in the first two weeks without a case on the phone, it wasn't an issue. And the wife even holds it left-handed, which is supposed to be more problematic. And I suppose it would be for guys with larger hands/fingers maybe.

I don't know... Our iPhone4 experience has been great here so far. But I know a few people myself who have had problems. One friend of mine had his phone replaced and the new phone doesn't suffer as much for signal issues and other glitches he was having. ...Quality control.

The contract on my 3GS isn't up for a while, so I'm going to wait until the next revision comes around. But like I said, the wife has it and uses it constantly. She's happy so far, nearly a month later.

Anyone heard or use the Square Trade warranty?

RIP OFF. EXTORTION.

So, pay $143.76 (monthly plan for 2 years) and IF there's a problem, they will take care of it once if you pay another $50 which comes to a total of $193.76 for a phone that costs you $199 (or for some $299).

I think I should start my own warranty business... :001_tongue:

Definitely not the phone for me. On Sunday my phone took a full dive from head level onto the curb while running. Scratched a little. No serious damage.

I tried short circuiting my brother in law's iPhone4. Didn't lose any bars. It does seem very random.

Yea, sounds terrible..

RF is a funny beast.

The degree of attenuation when bridging the two antennas is going to depend on the skin impedence of the person.

That can vary significantly form person to person, or even with the same person at different times (perspiration, skin dryness, air humidity, etc..)

The antenna issue is real...I'm sure of that...

The difference is that it becomes heavily obvious with areas that have crud signal...hence AT&T is the issue,

I'm in Singapore using the iPhone 4 and I've handed it to everyone and no matter what way they try they can't kill the signal, so its really an issue with the provider pushing support...

I hazard a guess as this is Apple saying to AT&T, "too much traffic? We'll fix that." and following that "fix your network and these complaints will go away"...
MicroCell apparently sorted some people though if I remember rightly, which is kinda a mini cell tower in your house isn't it?

I'll be interested to see what they say at this press conference tomorrow. Recall maybe?

It's weird. My wife and I got our iPhone 4's the day they came out. I have yet to drop a call with mine, and hers drops almost EVERY call. Totally random.

Jeff-
Thanks so much for the info, very helpful: )
Now- I wonder what Steve Jobs is going to say tomorrow ?

I too got an iPhone 4 on launch day, and I had a 3G beforehand. I can say with absolute certainty that mine drops calls when handles without a case shorting the antenna out. I get full bars at my house with the 3G and NEVER lost a call no matter how I held it. With the 4, I was holding it and my call got disconnected. I then went online to find out if others were having this problem, and sure enough, they were. I bought a case and the problem went away. CLEARLY there is an issue with the antenna design if a case made the problem go away. I'm an electrical engineer with RF training, this isn't rocket science. They should have put some insulation between us and the antenna design more than they have.

Even further, they moved the proximity sensor on the phone. This is what detects when it should turn the phone interface off because it is near your face. Before it used to be to the left of the ear speaker. Now, it is above it, and if you pinch your phone between your ear and your shoulder, it thinks you've moved it away from your ear and your face starts dialing, hanging up, switching to facetime or even speakerphone. VERY annoying.

Don't get me wrong, I love my iPhone 4, it is fast and looks great. Apps run so nicely. But it doesn't mean I am not disappointed with their lack of good engineering on parts of this phone that worked better in previous versions. The old adage goes "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". They could learn a lot from that.

wow i never even thought about that. of course thats why the reports are so inconsistent. id imagine if ur a person with sweaty hands all the time, theres more to conduct electricity and bridge the gap on the phone. most excellent i dont have sweaty hands :)

Haha, well I don't have sweaty hands and I have the problem. It also depends on your pH levels I believe as well. Just like how some people's skin reacts very negatively to metals touching them, and others have no problems at all.

I'm curious what type of case you used ? The Apple bumper or another brand ?
Also, just to be overly clear.. you're saying that the reception problem totally went away with the case, correct?

If so, when comparing the reception of the 3G to a "cased" iphone 4 ... how do they compare?

I know it may seem like I'm overdoing it with this question but... I have heard that many people are actually experiencing better reception with the new phone... After all the new antenna design is supposed to give you better reception right? (that was one of Apples main points in the design... to improve AT&T's shitty service.)

I got the bodyglove case as the AT&T store was all out of Apple bumpers and so what the Apple store when I got my phone.

I now have no reception issues. Overall, I have had one dropped call with the new case since I got it, and to be honest, it was probably switching towers and an AT&T problem. The signal strength was max when the call dropped.

So, from that perspective, the 4 has been better than the 3G once I overcame that one problem from a signal perspective.
