Let me first begin by saying up until this point, I've been a brand loyalist (maybe even an apologist at times).

When I moved from film and digital photography to filmmaking a few years ago, I chose to use the Red One for my first video (White Rabbits - Percussion Gun) and immediately fell in love with it. It had all of the post production options that I had grown to rely on in RAW photography, and just simply looked stunning. Sure it had some post-production hiccups with color-grading and editing, but in my mind, it was worth it.

After that I shot a number of shorts and music videos on the camera. When the time came to DP my first feature (You're Next, purchased by Lionsgate), I wanted to use the MX sensor. As a result, two bodies were sent to Red and upgraded and I was stunned at the image improvement.

Fast forward to today. It's more than 2 months after I placed my Scarlet order (November 10th) and still no news of when I'll be getting the camera. Not word one. Sure, the Bomb Squad Reps have been nice and all, but after sinking $12,000 in rentals on cameras that should have been the one I've purchased, I'm left with nothing more than a bitter taste in my mouth.

With 3 features and a few music videos around the corner what am I to do? Continue to burn money on rentals? Cross my fingers?

Unfortunately, I'm going to have to ship back all the camera support gear to Red (at yet another financial hit to me) and take a leap into a camera I'd prefer not to use.

Like most break-ups, it's difficult to do the thing you know is best. From where I'm standing it looks like I'm going to have to move on.

If you break up from red... where do you go to? Red's the prettiest girl on the block, and nice too. Having a scarlet in my hand, all I can say to you is you should think this through a little, and try to be patient. It's worth the wait.

Best thing is to keep watching the list, you must be moving up on it. It's a putty to bail right now.

@Joseph - November 10th. I've received everything except the camera.

@Michael - I know, she really is. That's the tough thing. But, we all know the best on the block isn't always the best for you. I just can't imagine I'll be getting it in the next 2 - 3 weeks. Is your's a Canon mount? That seems to be the big holdup from what I can ascertain from the list.

If you buy a used Red One instead, you can shoot your features at 4.5k.
Possibly better pictures than the Scarlet...
Than sell it for a Scarlet when you're ready.

You ordered 7 days after the release of a camera that people have been waiting 3 years for and your surprised you haven't got it yet? I ordered on the 6th and don't expect it for another month or two. Patience my friend, it will all be worth it in the end. If you were ahead of me, I would probably just sympathize with you and tell you to cancel your order :)

Why not offer a premium for an early Scarlet? Some lucky early owners could possibly endure the pain of waiting for maybe extra $5k in their bank account. Just a thought.

edit: I waited for the Epic for two years...painful? Yes. Worth the wait? Yes.

@pawel, not a bad thought. Maybe I'll give it a try when I get desperate and lonely in the middle of the night.

@Terry, I'm frustrated by this company. If they would at least offer shipment estimates, this would be a different story. I could plan my year around it. I make a living - that is, pay my bills and feed myself - using their equipment. Through all the hiccups, I still wanted to continue to. But I'm left with little choice at this point.

I think he's surprised that he doesn't know when he'll actually get it, not that he hasn't got it yet....and no-one actually knows right? Not even RED. I think it's fair to be frustrated and look elsewhere. I'm staying with my purchase of the Scalet and practicing Zen every day, but I, like many many others, are struggling to keep a smile our faces. It's been said a billion times, but I'll say it again (hell, I haven't piped up for a couple of months), all we want is some sort of clarification. The hottest chick on the block does the same thing..."are we going out? Are we official!!?? (I ask)...."and she simply won't answer, cos she simply doesn't have to. She's that hot. I know there was an order update not long ago, but it was anything but clear, and didn't mention the one thing we are all dying for.

Exactly! Instead of going out with my friends on a rare night off, I'm heartbroken on the internet looking up other cameras and figuring out how I can make them work. Breakups are tough.

Andrew, hang in there. In my opinion, the other options worth looking at are Alexa (might be too expensive to own a complete system), Sony F65 (Not available yet, and probably too expensive), The Canon C300 (Still a lot to be determined about this camera) or the Sony F3 with S-Log (Not as good as Red IMHO). So, you have to make sure the grass is really greener with these other options. I just think for the money, it's hard to beat RED right now if you're going to own the camera. So, waiting a few more weeks, although not ideal, might still be the better choice.

Andrew,

I feel you ur pain. I am frustrated as well but do not see the value in giving up at this point. Jim said from day 2 that the canon mounts would be the hold-up (wish he said it day 1). But when I look at the list I am amazed at how far they have come. Really they are only a couple of weeks behind original estimates. Not bad in the grand scheme. Life is marathon not a sprint. Just keep the faith and know you would not feel so passionate about this if it wasnt such a dope camera.

I know I didn't start this post, but I appreciate your comments and attitude...thanks :)

And your point is... ?? :confused1:

Seriously... Are we supposed to fall all over ourselves trying to talk you off the ledge because you name drop Lionsgate and shot a couple music videos? We, who have waited for three years are supposed to take pity on you and your few months? Don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out.

I can understand impatience but canceling a Scarlet order placed on the 10th of November now? Even if you ordered Canon mount, I think it honestly won't be that much longer. If there's one thing I've learned from following Red, it's patience. You've used the Red One M and MX... if those cameras will work for you, they're going for a steal right now. But to consider a completely different camera system altogether just because a little over 2 months after your deposit you haven't got an allocation? I think that's just getting too emotional and irrational, in my humble opinion.

It's a business decision for you, though, so if the rentals are breaking the bank, just buy a Red One... but if you can hold on even another month or two, it's worth it. Some of us have been waiting for Scarlet since the original announcement in 2008 of 3K for $3k... I am one of those people. In all that time I've seen the price of the camera go up dramatically, as well as its capabilities. Unlike you, I wasn't fortunate enough to order on November 10th or earlier. I've got a ways to go before my camera is allocated, probably, even though I went PL mount. But the way I see it, I've waited almost 4 years already, what's another month or two? Then again, I'm not relying on it to be my primary way of making money like you might be. You've obviously got paid gigs you have to do, and if your bottom line after returning all sorts of stuff to Red will suffer with another month or so of renting, do what you have to.

If you cancel, there's plenty of us who will move up :)

Seven posts, then a troll like this... Pissing in our ears? Shit like that is like walking into a ward of double amputees and crying about an ingrown toenail.
