  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I'm afraid of Scarlet

Scarlet could simply be a line tethered sensor head that accepts PL lenses and runs a hard wire to the red one for processing and recording. allowing the red one to be placed down and giving the scarlet head module accessability to get into small places, tough car shots ect. It may not even be a seperate camera.

Like the Silicon Imaging camera.

And this:

i really hope the scarlet is kick ass, looks like other options are coming out, i really im hoping so

Seeing the prices for the sumix packages, with their higher end camera at $2500 says something about pricing expected for a scarlet

I don't think there's much chance of that at all - what's the point of a pocket camera if you need to drag around a RED ONE body, battery, and RED-DRIVE?

I think that 'Pocket Camera' implies that it will be an ultra-portable, take-anywhere kind of camera.

We believe that "Scarlet" is one of those cameras that comes around every quarter century or so... but then again, we are delusional.

I wonder if RED (company) will be having open beta testing for SCARLET, or if they will rely on the lessons learnt from the RED Camera.

I don't think the target end users of SCARLET would tolerate bugs and teething problems as reservation holders have with the RED.

What's the timeframe for SCARLET anyway, is it going to be prototypes at NAB then on sale for Christmas?

I just hope to have it an enjoy it, playing around with the camera and be able to take it to the pirenees or to the dessert and come back with great images. Use it to test things and play around with it.
That is all I want, HD if 2k GREAT!!! and be able to do 60 fps with a good raw and I will be more than happy. Please manual focus!!!! PLEASE!!!!

They will probably have learnt a lot - but anything made needs betatesting, as always.

Well I guess you should wait until its out of beta then ;)

I truly hope they will sell it in a beta stage with all the quirks, bugs and problems...
..I believe its a privilege to be a part of the beta/bug/usage testing...and being able to contribute with feedback that might shape the camera to what I want. Very few companies have the guts to let their customers do this.

Its the future though. Bring it on! Please :)

(and if you dont like it, go hide under a rock until its out of beta :shiftyph34r: )

I said the target end user, which is not me, I'm a RED reservation holder and happy to be part of the process. Nowhere in my post did I say I personally would have a problem with an open beta for SCARLET.

I'm just speculating on whether RED will change there approach to development with SCARLET. The prosumer market is very competitive, many cameras in that market have a lot of bang for not much buck!

Forget it

oh my dear god...

i was tempted to buy a second hand DVX100 or a hv20 but now i just want to wait till april. just make sure it works with my SGpro and has inbuilt flip :D

Jim

hey jim, like seriously, i got so many people excited about the red and my buddy here in calgary bought one and probably gonna let me assist on his shoots.

I talked about the Red a lot, and i know your scarlet will be nothing but revolutionary, excellent work sir.

To me, it's a run and gun style camera, so it fits in the pocket, has non-interchangeable lenses (because they would add enormously to cost and bulk) and uses either the full 4k sensor or a cut down version of it, depending on the sensor's physical size.
Red One's Mysterium sensor measures 24.4 x 13.7 mm, roughly the size of a typical APS-C DSLR sensor. If Scarlet had anything close to it in size, the bulk of even a nonzoom "normal" lens would prohibit the camera, if it had a noninterchangeable lens, from fitting comfortably in a pocket.

Ok, Jim has cleared stated we should remember it's a POCKET camera, but since when does a pocket cam fit in a pocket? Only the newest mobile phones fit comfortably in my pocket and these are only 10 x 4 x 1 cm, I expect scarlet to be a bit larger then that.... :shifty:

Yeah I've been thinking this same thing since they announced it. Which is why I don't stress the pocket comment too much. I'm just assuming it's going to be small.

I dont believe that pocket literally means like jean or pant pocket, that would be
a still camera.

Exactly. Take for instance, the "Pocket Bike" which is just a mini motorcycle. Can't really fit in your pocket, but it's much smaller than an actual motorcycle. Hence, the term "Pocket". Maybe RED thinks Pockets was a better moniker than "mini" or "lite".

the thing is,

alot of guys are saying the RED is pretty darn affordable etc ect...but alot of people are forgetting, for people entering the industry, they have to buy lenses, RED DRives batteries tripods computers, and this all ammounts to more like $40,000

don't get me wrong, they guys at RED are Gods considering that there product blows cameras costing up to $100,000 out of the water, and alot of buyers already have their own lenses and other kit
but for a 17 year old like me, who's trying to break into the industry, I've broken my neck trying to raise $20,000 and with that, I guess I can get an EX-1 and a Letus35 like Philip Bloom. The RED is just way too expensive and pro for someone like me. I guess what I'm trying to say is, they're almost certainly, making a 2K camera, considering the new Scarlet2K forum, and I hope they include a whole set of filmic frame rates and if they price this under $8,000 then an indie indie like me could start out with quite a cushie number. Then I can go out and spend $10,000+ on a nice set of glass or upgrade my editing hardware or tripods or whatever.

I have a feeling the Scarlet won't record sound and for it to be pocket sized, the lens may be fixed (which would also be cost effective for someone like me) however, while my case of trying to be as cheap as possible is quite unique others will be looking for interchangeable 35mm lenses...

The babbling seen above is simply testament to how diverse expectations of the Scarlet are, I guess I can say I'm certainly going to buy one because it's in my budget, I just need to know a little more about the specs, the price, etc. $2500 seems too hopeful to me $8000 is alot more realistic...

oh, by the way can anyone recommend a good set of lenses for me to start out with, if say the Scarlet has interchangeable lenses. I don't think I'll be spending more the $8,000 on a set of lenses, is it worth getting one of the RED Zoom Lenses in that case? (I know this defies the point of a pocket camera, but that's not what I'm after), and one other thing. I have one of the new Super thin leopard iMacs, will that be good enough to edit 2K (or even 4K)?

RAM 2.5GB

HDD 500GB 7200RPM

Graphics card ATI Radeon HD 2600 PRO with 256MB memory

2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Extreme

i'd be really grateful if someone could suggest something

Ameer

Scarlet won't be anywhere close to RED ONE's performance. If RED make Scarlet anywhere close to the RED ONE they will be pissing a lot of RED ONE owners off and that I'm sure is the last thing they want to do. So I would forget 35mm sensor, 35mm lenses, 4K etc. Won't happen. If you need that, RED ONE is on the market now. It won't be a HVX or EX1 type of camera either. It will probably be much much smaller.

do you mean that it won't be as good as the HVX or EX-1
because \i highly doubt that.

we know that Scarlet is 2K and so that's a rather big hint that it'll be better than the HVX and EX-1.

Whether or not is competes with EX-1, nobody can say, but camera size is not equivalent to performance or "good".

Scarlet is probably 2K indeed, but the EX-1 is 1,92K So the difference isn't huge. Look at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_common_resolutions#Television.2Fmovies

It's only about 70 extra lines...

thats why the scarlet must excel not just in resolution, but in dynamic range,
DOF, RAW recording, argonomics, its gotta be upgradable. 2K is not a huge improvement over 1080p. Im sure the Red team knows that and are making scarlet unobsolete.
