ILLUMINA Primes

ILLUMINAs with FF

ILLUMINAs with FF

I've used the ILLUMINAs with a RED in a StediCam situation - using both IRIS and FF control and NEVER had a problem. The 50mm has the most movement, about 1/4 of an inch. I was there when they tested the ENTIRE set at Michel Trudel's in Montreal T1.2 all the way down the line! We took the opportunity to check out several sets of MUCH more expensive glass... too! Beautiful, but T1.3 to T2.x+. They are taking delivery of several sets!

Thanks for clarifying Michael, will look out for your review :)

Won't be a review - I'm not qualified. Like Gibby and probably at least half of all red1 owners I work primarily in nature, doc, corporate, etc where feature/narrative style focus puller shooting is rare - so I'm a pretty strong believer in using modern SLR lenses until the situation proves they won't work. I only intend to shoot a simple vid of the mechanical operation so people can see for themselves rather than a lot of speculation and hearsay.

With that said, I have 25 years of working closely with ALL levels of motion picture/video customers with a lot of experience seeing what people (myself included) THINK they need in gear and then see later what they ACTUALLY needed. So to me given the bang for the buck, good optics, reasonable or better mechanics, relatively compact and light, and most of all the speed - which when you need it, you need it - whether cine, still, B4, fixed video lenses, etc. these illuminas would be my default choice until some other similar priced lenses proved to be dramatically better in those other respects.

I think Tim must be simply talking about the older Illumina offerings. These lenses are also easily confused with the Optica Elites. The thing is he must be working on second hand information as most rental houses simply haven't actually seen these lenses.

Yeah, any barrel moving forward is an issue but up to a maximum of 1/2 and inch is not in anyway a deal breaker. Its fine with clip-on s and studio matt boxs have donuts, used plenty worse on FF4's. I don't see what this has to do with 3D either. 1/4 of an inch to 1/2 an inch of travel won't make much of a difference to your mirror rig.

I tested Xenars quite extnsively and barrel forward is a real POA. Unacceptable for a cine lens for the type of work I do (commercials / features). As you have to set the MB a quarter to half an inch further forward (depending on lens). This runs into vignetting issues with wide lenses or limiting the number of stages you can use. Take your pick. At 5k this will definitely be even more pronounced. The other choice is to use a clip on MB. Try finding a decent arri quality clip on with three stages stages (at least two rotating for grad and pola). Arri doesn't make it. I've searched high and low for a three stage (2 rotating) pro quality clip on and I all I could find was the Chrosziel 456. But it's a bit too rickety for the productions I do.
