  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Ikonoscope A-cam dII

The Nox is not dead. They are advancing their camera and testing a lot. I've seen some slow motion tests of them (slow motion was not mentioned in the feature-list a year ago).

Looks like a wonderful camera. But, they are missing one important component. Jim's marketing magic. So, they will remain a research project; never a product available for public use. sorry.

The camera is supposely to be around 80 000$ by the way isn'it?

Does anyone know anything out the heat output of the DII? or Scarlet? I know the RED One can get hot. I like to shoot underwater stuff (surf) but most smaller HD cameras heat up too much and fog the housings-this is the only reason why all surf cinematographers are still on 16mm film-small form factor and built rock solid.

Just having 12bit S16 Global CCD is a killer deal for me + interchangeable lens make it a serious Scarlet Stalker/Killer. Imagine how much Panasonic wants for their full HD rasta 10 bit 2/3" hpx3700 Varicam. Heck, the hpx500 with up rez resolution, 8 bit DVCPRO HD, is US$8000 body alone after rebate.

I hope with the advancement in technology, it will the beginning of the end for 1/3", 1/4", 1/2" sized prosumer cameras.

It is passively cooled (no fan) so that should answer your question re heat.

What's the magnification factor for a 35mm stills lens to the DII?
I heard a 35mm becomes a 100mm.

I think you are confusing focal length with angle of view. A 35mm lens is a 35mm lens on any camera, however as a ballpark try this table. I compared a full frame DSLR spec to super 16 1.78 for equivalent fields of view.If you take the 35m lens you have and put it on the Acam, you would need to get a 95mm lens for your DSLR full frame camera to match the FOV of both cameras. The focal length doesn't change miraculously as you change one lens to another. Here is a link to the calculator at Panavision.

Pretty sure they are shipping with the same lens that ships with the A-cam. That is a 16mm lens so I would imagine a 35mm would be equivalent to a 70mm (ish).

No its a 9mm and made for Ikonoskop by Kinoptik I believe.

This is the equivalent of putting a 24mm on a full frame Dslr in FOV, so medium wide.

Frame Size of this camera is 3.5MB per Frame! (As it says on the specs on their website!)

That means a 24p shoot eats about 84MB/s. The maximum the Ikonoskop can do is 60fps which means 210MB/s. You need something much faster than a two CF Card Raid-0 box to do that. That's why they use their own thingy.
But the guy at the Ikonskop booth at IBC said the 80GB mag will cost way less than a 16GB SxS Card from Sony's EX3. Plus they are developing a e-sata reader for the magazine.
So will see.

So that may put it somewhere in the price range of the 16GB Red CF card. But 80GB @ 240MB/sec. Ummm.... Red needs to either support these cards or make their own at the same price point. This sounds great.

So if an 80GB mag will cost less than $850US (the price of a Sony 16GB SxS on B&H) and the camera will costs about $9000-what do you think a nice complete package will come in at?
Obviously we all have different needs but Im wondering more what you'd realistically like to include. Is this more of a second unit cam? or is any willing to spend some serious dough on accessories?

I would think of this camera as a "sneaky" cam.

Could be an A camera if you make it one, might need to invest in a handful of magazines and a nice set of s16 lenses maybe a zoom. It might end up being $15k-$35k depending on what you choose.

If I had one, I would keep it small and discreet which would be a perfect for cinema vertie.

The question is, would it be worth trading in your prosumer cam and 35mm adapter for an Ikonoskop A-Cam DII? :)

M101.

5 Reasons why Ikonoskop and Red can co-exist

Hi all, I've written a short list of reasons why I believe that Ikonoskop's dII offering is unique and overlaps very little with what Red is bringing to the table.
Read it here.

Accordingly, I've donned my flame retardant suit and would appreciate feedback. :innocent:
