  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Ikonoscope A-cam dII

real world tests will be very interesting to see soon enough

That's one thing that I was surprised about. They don't have any test footage up (yet). There's obviously a niche market this camera is going after and they could have taken it out and show us some examples. I'd like to see how it handles high contrast and rugged situations (off-road car mount or something)...They had great stuff up there of the A-Cam.

Scarlet fans don't really like it, but RedOne fans seem to not mind?

Again...some start to compare apples and oranges. this is a S16 like camera, something like a scarlet (when it`s out) not like a Red One.

Nobody with a sane mind would compare an Aaton XTR with an Arricam ST, but why then compare the D2 with the R1 ?

because it's fun :)

Well I for one have dropped some cash on one of these. Put your self in the place of early R1 adopters. They had little more to go on than a dream and a long wait. I have been waiting for someone to continue the fine work of Mr Kreines of Kinetta and develop and S16 style camera that resembles the ease of use of an Aaton A-minima. Think of the corners you can poke it into, the countries you can visit with it passing as a consumer cam. The glass options...micro, macro, endoscopes etc etc. even C mounts....what a small form factor. Low power consumption (well it seems if they are running of camcorder batts), very low weight etc. I am sick of trucking around large broadcast type cameras around the world...bring on a pelican case kit camera. I'm sure they have the post underway by supporting the open standard DNG format...adobe and all of the partners (big ones) aren't dummies. I put my cash on the table with a promised 99% return should I not take up the offer. Where is the risk there. All I can say is I'm more likely to make the early cash on a Acam DII than I am to make money on a scarlet with the exhaustive line of preferential R1 customers and others ahead of me in line. Isn't that why you own cameras in this business.

No more info yet, the guys are pretty busy at IBC. I expect to give them a grilling at the end of the week. I'm very surprised how little press there is at IBC from 3rd parties or attendant blogs..I've been looking. It makes NAB look like a zoo in comparison.

Fence,
You are correct. This is the email I got back from Ikonoskop...

they've announced it's a ccd sensor.

A bit of a hands on reiew here in english would be much appreciated. Something beyond the press releases....How it feels, any pictures displayed and thoughts, a few photos of all the bits not in any press etc etc

I had one in my hands today the show here at IBC.

It's pretty damn impressive in form factor.

Uncompressed 1920x1080 in DNG file sequence recorded to a 80G 250MB "flash module" which is most likely raided CF. HDMI out, audio in. up to 60fps.

They had some footage in the booth that looked very impressive.

Not sure how one would use this practically on any kind of long form project with uncompressed RAW, and at about $9K US - doesn't really make any scense to me with SCARLET around the corner.

And yeah, pretty cool to have something that small that you can put different lenses on.

I was impressed that these guys made this, it works, and it's VERY small.

its cool, i like the 80 GB Ram 280 MB/sec memory cards.

what will the RED RAM do?

And if they would start to collabarate with cineform...

and con for the scarlet is the fixed lens.
this is a disadvantage...technical pov

but the price is unbeatable...red nerd pov

Any word on whether there would be an outboard card adapter...one of these to E-sata would be good. LTO3a would work for offload with the card fitting nicely into a tape several times over.

I wonder whether the DNG standard is the same for cinema DNG and whether that means that when the cinema spec is announced that a firmware upgrade would mean the scalability of the spec would allow mild compression options and proxy workflow.

What sort of footage did they have?

Mark, as I see it the scarlet and this camera are exclusive markets. Those that need interchangeable lenses in a small form factor aren't going to look at the scarlet. You can put a superspeed on a DII and be 2 stops faster. 2 stops is the difference between working at night on the street with the natural texture of a city's illumination and not being able to capture the scene. A red one allows interchange of lenses but a much bigger camera it is with all of the associated difficulties that come with the large form factor. I have been shooting super 16 and high end HD for quite ome time and the faster stop also allows for a more textural depth of field falloff if done correctly. Just my thoughts.
