  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

If you had to choose one focal length what would it be? (just for fun)

Just for fun, I was wondering what is everyone's favourite Focal Lengths? For me, it would personally be 30mm because it looks the most 'natural' due to it being near the same 'focal length' of the human eye.

What about everyone else?

If shooting 5K or Super 35mm I'd say a 35mm prime is pretty much the most universal bet. I've shot entire projects on just a 35mm. 28mm is a very interesting length as well, which you're all right around.

Interestingly enough at 8K, which is a bit larger than FF35 and VistaVision in width I enjoyed 55mm a lot.

Phil, is there any vignetting with Otus 55mm at 1.4 on VistaVision 8K?

Would you know if image circle of Otus 55mm is as large as from Otus 85mm?

Pretty sure that stuff about a focal length being close to the human eye is made up and based on old SLR viewfinder magnification, isn't it? I'd go for something in the 20-28mm range.

Didn't see any while shooting Forged. A good chunk of that is the 55mm. There's a bit of 85mm in there too. No issues. I actually had a whole bunch of glass on there. Milvus, old Olympus, a couple of Canon L series primes. They all played nice.

The Phase One/Sony 101MP sensor is 53.7x40.4mm. Weapon 8K is 40.96x21.6mm, still relatively in line with the approximate coverage of FF35 lenses.

The 55mm probably has a slightly smaller image circle, but keep in mind that medium format sensor isn't what those lenses were designed for. It's rad that the 85mm covers that much though.

The one Otus I NEEEEED to test on the 8K is the 28mm. That will happen somewhat soon I think. Pretty sure it's good news, but time will tell.

35mm is my gold. Anything above is limiting what you can shoot, anything lower will loose some of the depth while also limiting what you can shoot. But because Dragon 6k is a bit wider I might be used to that feeling so on s35mm I might be happy with a 28 or 30mm. Around that ballpark anyway.

Thank you Phil.

Btw, $150 Canon 40mm 2.8 also has huge image circle, as tested on Alpa/Phase One.

25mm, not brave enough to go for 18mm yet

If talking about super35 size sensors, so 32mm/35mm, and generally speaking a "normal" lens on any size sensor i.e 16mm on super16 format, 50mm on FF camera etc.

85mm is my jam. I like that deep look and I don't mind having to be further back. It sits on my camera 90% of the time. Not sure if anyone has used the Tamron 35mm yet but it's sick. Super sharp and a heck of a long focus throw. Nothing like the tiny little ones on some of the canon glass.

50mm

I love portraits, getting in there close...but giving talent some room. 50mm is my fave these days.

Used to be 35mm, but hate being in people's grill...
