  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I know this subject has been beaten to death but who doesnt like debating lenses. These would be for the owner/operator narrative, music videos, commercials....and would rent out when not using. Also with the Dragon sensor coming up consider sensor coverage. All things to consider....

So, if you only had 50k to spend, would you:

Buy new Cooke Mini S4/Panchros set of 6 lenses 2.8 across

Buy used set of Zeiss Super Speeds M3 5 lenses 1.3 across

Buy 3 Zeiss Ultra Primes like a 24/32/85 and build from there later as money allows 1.9 across

Buy Schneider Cine Xenar III's set of 6 lenses 1.9-2.2 across

I don't pretend to know anything but I say:

Personally I feel like we often have too many lens options when you could shoot so much on a 32 and be happy. Those three lenses would cover you for almost everything but I would ditch the 24 and go 20 for sure if not 16.

Hey James, thanks for playing ;)

Im kinda stuck between doing that or the Cookes....man I love those cookes and the low light stuff Ive seen with them wasnt bad at all and absolutly gorgeous! I would think the Dragon would have better low light as well which would make the Cooke's even more usable.

Interesting Timur, you own mini S4's...reason you would pick 3 UP's instead? The 2.8 an issue for you?

dont think 2.8 is an issue for personal use..But its a big negative for rental business.we have panchros (mini S4) for a year and they rented like 10 days only in 1 year :)
just because of T 2.8

With the Dragon sensor coverage i think it comes down to are you OK with shooting at 5.5k or do you "need" to shoot at 6k. It's real hard to make the decision at this point, so the Panchro's would be bad if you wanted to shoot at 6k. My gut feel is all the current cinema lenses will be fine at 5.5k - assuming red will do a 5.5k mode to support all the old s35 lenses. I think it's a tough time to make long term lens decisions. if someone did hand me 50k and said go buy lenses today, i would for sure go with old UP's, or get two master primes.

Ya, that extra $14800 at the moment that would mean only two lenses for me...but I could go 3 S4's probably but even that would go over 50k. 50k is my cap at the moment but I plan on filling in the set over the next year.

I have a set of Mini S4's and could not be happier. I will probably buy another set as mine is always out rented elsewhere. Once you shoot with them, you'll understand. Best money spent in a while. Very versatile and lightweight. No less a Cooke than a 5i.
And service from ZGC has been amazing.
