I'm thinking of investing in an Epic, but I was wandering what would happen to Red Digital Cinema in the unfortunate event of J.J. retiring?

I know this is a pretty indelicate question to pose, but nevertheless legittimate if the there is the danger of investing in a technology that could disappear from one day to another if it's charismatic founder/owner was to go.

Anyway, many more prosperous and successful years to Jim, whatever the answer might be.

I figure if you buy an Epic-X and accessories today, you will have a kit to make first rate movies for the next Ten Years at least, even if RED disappeared. Anything can happen, YOU could disappear!

jim jannard and his fast growing team started a "re(d)volution."
nothing can stop this "re(d)volution".
all of the employees and friends of red joined it...

nobody and nothing can stop that. :-)

and our part as customer is, to infect our clients, producers, friends etc...
the best we can do is, to produce good images and pictures. this will be a great reputation for red.

so bob, go out and shoot the beautifules images. it's for you, and it's for RED !

cheers !

I wondered the same thing a few years back and asked if there was a contingency plan should Fearless Leader decide to sign up as astronaut for one of the proposed Mars missions, meaning he would be out of low earth orbit for a number of years. Eventually, it was made known that Jarred would be in charge and naming him as, I don't know... President for Life or something like that, made it official.

My worries were abated and I am confident that from this point on, Jim has epi-genetically imprinted RED with his DNA so that everything will go on as well or (no offense to Jim) even better than before.

From one mind, RED has evolved into a collective mind.

I'm cracking here george !!!!!! Loooooool !
Bob, There are Ted, Jarred and many other people in RED driven by PASSION. As Norbert says , The ReDvolution is unstoppable. When i look at my Epic, i know that i'm future proof for a while... Buy your future Red Epic NOW, and you'll enjoy the obsolescence is obsolete philosophy. No obsolescence for your 5K footages.

There are enough cameras out there that even if Red fell off the face of the earth tomorrow, people would service them and make parts for them. They hit critical mass a while ago.

IMSO Jim as every SMART Founder | CEO should do, has been building RED with a very strong and diverse Team behind, starting with the President, Jarred, and with those that we don't see in the Forums, invest in RED, and happy shooting, make sure your shots are well lit and your lens in Focus... ;)

With the due respect, there isn't only one RED founder. Before RED, there already was dvxuser... ;-)

I bought a really nice pair of Oakley's the other day that I am very proud of, the best shades I have ever owned, and also the same ones Denzel wore on the Book of Eli, which I didn't find out until afterwards.

I second Ketch... The team and camera is his legacy along with Oakley. What Mr. Jannard has done, twice now, has only been done a few other times (Sir Richard Branson for one). Jarred, Ted, and the rest of the gang who have been there from day one are the key holders. I am not worried though I wish Jim continued amazing health.

Build a solid company and it will thrive on its own assuming continued good management. Mr Jannard has demonstrated a solid and rare talent for doing just that with Oakley first, and now with Red.

I've never been an employee of Jim, Oakley, or Red - but I've known Jim since 1984. I was already fully on board the Red bandwagon way back in 2005. I was one of Red's first two customers - Mark Pederson being the other.

The above has provided me some clear insight into what motivates Jim. In my opinion Jim would never leave Red because he started Red out of his deep passion for cameras and shooting images. Nobody was making his ideal camera - so he decided to make it himself. He totally loves a good challenge - Oakley was his first big professional challenge, and Red was his second (and in my opinion final) big professional challenge.

If by chance Jim was to die or be seriously incapacitated I'm sure there are very solid transition plans in place for the Red company itself. Jim is a great team builder, and he has a stellar team in place. Red is here to stay - that should be a real source of comfort for Red fans, and a real source of heartburn for Red naysayers.

Long live Jim, Red Team, and Red...

1st off... silly thread. I'm not going anywhere.

2nd off... I'm not the most valuable person at RED. Jarred is. And he is not going anywhere. If something happened to me... there is Jarred. If something happened to Jarred... there is me.

3rd off... as long as Graeme, Rob, Kent, Mike, Stuart, Matt, Matt, Uday, Bimal, Brent, Nate and a host of others are at RED... you are fine. And they are not going anywhere.

So stop this silly nonsense.

Jim
