  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

IBC 2009 ¿Where is the Scarlet?

I believe the brains have basic audio I/O support via unbalanced stereo mini-jacks like many prosumer cameras. This has not been confirmed however.

Very true, and even if all Scarlet 2/3" did was offer images equal to an F900 and frame rates twice that of a Varicam ...

let alone with the pricing and other advanced feature advantages.... you would still expect it to be a major hit.

Scarlet 2/3" use the Mysterium-X.
Scarlet 2/3" is 3K.
So, I expect Scarlet 2/3" offer the better images quality than F900.
Should I?

This still requires a data pipeline and sensor/A/D processor speeds good enough to handle the data rates required, even if storage is off camera. Notice that none of the big players have signed on to the standard.

Will this stop the big guys? I don't think so. Is Red the only one capable of producing this technology that allows the handling of motion picture RAW? I don't think so. Don't be too surprised when the RAW wars begin, you can bet they are coming.

No question they can do it. The question is at what price and in what time frame? At the rate Canon is improving based on existing camera raw frame rates they are two years or more away from RAW 24p at something like XL or XH price with APSC sensor. I think Panny may beat them all with 4/3 format RAW.

But the frame rates you are talking about are UNCOMPRESSED raw. RED doesn't do that either, REDCODE is a substantially compressed RAW which eases the burden on all of the rest of the chain.

A few things slow down Canon with doing a RED type of compressed raw. 1) they didn't really need it for the initial products. 2) They weren't really geared in that direction so it will take a little time. With all their resources (engineering - not just money) they can probably do it even quicker than RED did but they will also probably debug it more before it is released. 3) The form factor they have been working in - 5D/7D - is really microminiature compared to REDONE so more limitations on how much processing (and power/heat) you can fit in those bodies. So you are probably correct that it might take them that long to get the DIGIC 6, 7 or whatever fast enough to handle it in that compact form factor. But they can do what RED did also and just make a bigger camera - say an oversize XH-A1 - and do it much quicker on the video side of their product line because they have more size and power to work with.

But then do they really want to all that quickly? I really don't think Epic or Scarlet will affect the Canon/Nikon digital stills market much (the medium format stuff may be a different story) it is more relevant compared to their prosumer video division which for Canon is pretty small. So maybe they decide to try to kick some ass in the provideo/motion picture market or maybe they just take their time and do incremental improvements for another year or two.

Canon seems to have the least to cannibalize at the high end -- which is to say, it has no high end to speak of. Canon is supposed to make a major product announcement at the end of this month. Red has the apparent advantage because it has a proven track record with Red One and is only a few months from releasing new products. Who knows whether Canon has been secretly developing the sensor technology to compete head-on with Red. Where Canon obviously has the know-how is lens technology. If it were to unveil an APS-C-format video camera system, complete with a set of high-quality, fast, inexpensive video/film lenses (including an 8x or 10x constant-aperture zoom), as well as an 18-MP global-shutter sensor and a high-quality "RAW" codec (e.g., a 5-6K version of Cineform RAW), it might have something. If Canon prices such a camera body like the XL H1, it may be handing Red a victory. If it's closer to the XH's price, then Canon stands to clean up.

Like I learned from a co-worker from long ago: Nothing happens before its time.

I used to visit this forum a year ago.
They announced the Scarlet and I was very excited because it was exactly the camera I wanted to buy.
I put all my projects on hold...
First they said that it will be available in spring 2009.
Then they said it will be available in summer. Then they pushed the date to autumn.....
Now it's autumn and there is no Scarlet to buy....
I eventually purchased a Panasonic camera and I will never buy from Red because they tricked me...

Fall is more than a single day long, it's an entire block of months.

Regardless, they didn't "trick" you, it's been explained that most of the delays are related to the economic issues the world has been going through, those increasing the cost and time for some of the components they are having designed for the camera.

It's totally understandable, and at the time they original announced the release date these delays were not foreseen, they didn't trick anyone.

Thank the Lord for the economic meltdown.

"economic issues"

This camera is going to annihilate every other cam company, especially at the projected price. Now I know this will probably change, but even at 5k for an entry level S3K I'm sure they'll make the R&D money back. I know of 25 if not more of my film buds that would throw 5k right now....

It's time to throw us a bone...... ?

For some reason people want to pay more than the projected price for this camera  If only GM and Chrysler could be that lucky :driving:

I'm also waiting for Scarlet. And while I find it frustrating that it's not yet here I'm not losing any money post-poning projects.
I got an XHA1 and HV30 and will add next month the Eos 7D (primarily to upgrade my 10D).
By the time Scarlet comes out these cameras will have made me some money without giving me the feeling I 'missed the boat'.

Of course it would be great to get news of Scarlet every other day :-)

I work for a fruit company that is known for leaving their users anxiously waiting. If RED is anything like my company, the Scarlet will be well worth the wait.
