  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

IBC 2009 ¿Where is the Scarlet?

Some people are artists and don´t need/want a business mindset ;) I am one of them. Earn my money otherwise and wait for a S35 scarlet as long as it takes but the no show at IBC of any scarlet had me shortly a bit worried that my mind played tricks with me thinking that the anticipated volume - especially for the fixed lens kit - might be a bit overpowering so they have put it on hold and make the expensive ones with less volume available first until they have ramped up production sufficiently (which my brain told me might be a year or more). But I think the more logical reason is that IBC is for Broadcast Professionals with big budgets mostly and that an EPIC is a much better show and as I was just pointed to in another thread the only difference is mainly the ASICS which is not done for EPIC either so I guess - everybody a deep breath - I remember beeing on here for the RED ONE announcement and the prototypes they had at some tradeshow (wasn´t it also IBC) didn´t even have a sensor in them and where behind glass - these things are touchable, have working sensors (the big sensors even which are always harder to produce then the 2/3rds) and the remotes even power on - that is hell of a good sign. It took about 4 month for the RED one to land in the hand of the first owners and about 10 month before it was available pretty much instantly. My brain expects that to half now that RED has the experience - if nothing goes wrong - and there is always something that can go wrong - silicon, software written by mortals etc pp.

Steve: maybe the Redusers shouldn't be so hard on him. Many businesses (most?) have multiple criteria for purchase decisions and timing. Budget cycles, cash flow, tax implications, etc.

Maybe people anticipate projects even farther down the road but would like to spend time learning/getting comfortable well in advance (and maybe make some money shooting other projects or renting it to others) but doesn't want to do it with an interim camera. Maybe the anticipated interim work or rentals are fairly low profit so the cost/benefit doesn't work as well if they have to rent or take a 30% loss on reselling the interim camera.

It is reasonable that RED may not be able to give him the information he needs when he needs it, BUT it isn't unreasonable for him to ask. It's great that a lot of us are exceedingly patient, but again it isn't unreasonable for others to be less so. Or to feel (not me) that since RED never seems to get close to the projections that they might be being teased rather than given a realistic schedule.
Good points Michael. As you know, things are a little different with how RED operates as opposed to Sony, Canon, Panasonic, etc. You may hear rumors about a particular model the big boys are working on but even the rumors tend to start late in the game. By the time the word starts to really hit the masses, they are closer to having a shipping date, or at least a realistic timetable. Red hasn't taken that approach. They throw ideas out there, they develop those ideas, they fine tune them, etc. all in front of us (or at least as close as they can within reason). This of course leads to people getting excited and wanting one right away. But as Red has openly acknowledged, sometimes they have to shift course or put something on hold based on a wide variety of factors, such as manufacturers of parts closing down or the market suddenly changing.

I will agree that RED's approach is not for everyone. I do feel for those who are waiting on Scarlet. I would consider myself one of those who are thinking about getting one for more mobile shooting. So I am excited about it, want the option of buying one as soon as possible, etc. I just know the reality here. It will be done when Red says it will be done, or more accurately when they are in the boxes on the shipping docks.

I also do understand the business side of purchasing things, and the tax implications so I know for some this is going to be a frustrating process. Certainly not one for those who need solid timetables. All I can say to that is that Red may not be the best option in that case. As of right now, there is no official release date. Therefore, there is no way to plan for it from the business side. A ballpark guess won't do you any good if you need to know if it will be ready to ship by December 31.

Hopefully my statements don't come off as harsh. Not my style. Just trying to inject some reality based on experience. Red is a great company because they can do things their way. Most of the time that is a benefit to the customer. Sometimes, it might be an inconvenience. For the most part, I'd like to see them continue to do it their way because the product is that good and continuing to improve.

Everyone should know what to expect given what happened with the RED ONE - it took ages for it to be released (more than a year after the expected release date for some people), but it ended up being far more awesome than people could have imagined - when it was first announced, 4K was going to be RAW port only! Still, over a thousand people signed up. And then it got the ability to record 4K onto CF, and now even higher resolution!

In short, this camera is going to be awesome (probably far more than we expect now), but it's no surprise that we're going to have to wait for it... And RED have been completely honest about that from the start - they're 'everything subject to change' motto is everywhere.

hey, first post on here. I've been lurking on here for a couple of moths now looking for any clues as to a release date. I look forward to more news to come out on this camera. It looks like I'll have to wait awhile longer to see if they release this camera soon.

All I'd really like to know is what sorta price I'm looking at so I can start saving for the scarlet. I'm looking at getting the 2/3 fixed kit myself. In the mean time, I can go for one of those single chip CMOS SD card cameras to shoot stuff.:undecided:

Actually I bet the scarlet is a lot more ready than we think it is and they are just playing very careful and quiet.

Afterall, 'canon is watching and aware of Jannard' Woooooooohhhh

I'm looking forward to the Scarlet Fixed for a run and gun camera. I went out today shooting with the gear I have, not the gear I wished I had. I was happy to see a camera on the new iPod nano. I can see myself sticking one of those on a rocket for a cool POV shot for a web show I work on for fun. I'm here for the fun. AndyHV30, just open a savings acount and put $20 a week in there and don't touch it. Even if you have to wait a year after the camera is out to get the money saved your shooting and editing skills with your HV30 will improve your filmmaking skills. Someone, somewhere is shooting a feature right now with the new $150 iPod Nano and when they finish the movie it will be a big deal and get write ups and TV interviews while some of you sit here and complain your film is on hold because the Scarlet is still being built. 12 hours from now I'll be shooting a F-22. I wish I had a Scarlet or Red One to shoot it with but it will still be fun.

Canon is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo far away from competing with Scarlets specs it doesn't matter.

"Oh they're offering up to 40p! Ha we'll do .... 18p, that'll show them."

Red are banking on volume for the Scarlet, and by the modular nature of the both programs, to make it all work. Its a completely different deal to the RED1 so rest assured they know what they are doing.

Have faith brother!!

I think the OP might work for Canon and is just trying to spread doubt.

A fixed Scarlet won't be released. RED missed this window. At this price point the market has gone elsewhere. It went to Canon and their DSLR's with the added benefit of taking the glass and additional audio to the next body. A fixed Scarlet would represent the very same camera RED says it's trying to replace, surely the REDDIES don't want to be stuck with just a 2/3 sensor?

Perhaps we can thank them for getting the ball rolling but expect to see a traditional full frame camera next year from Canon that will be delivered when they say it will be delivered.

Maybe because for a variety of uses, a 2/3" sensor makes a hell of a lot of sense. As much as I want to shoot with the 617 and 645, and I'll get some great shots with them, I recognize and understand that that size of sensor is impractical for many uses. For that, shooting 2/3" will be perfect. I'll carry a 2/3" with me always - just in case, because I'll get utterly superb quality and the shot that I want - and in focus.

Unless Canon releases a new codec that performs like the R3D, I think RED's scarlet will be a hit. I posted a thread before asking as to why RED went with a 2/3rd" sensor instead of an aps-c sized on and came to the conclusion that for the target audience red was aiming at, it was more practical.

Sony Broadcast anyone? I want the 2/3" scarlet to replace my Sony SD studio cameras.

It's not just that it's the target audience it's aiming for, but there are occasions when a smaller sensor in a nice contained package is much more useful and practical. It's all about right tool for the job.

Don't forget the lower price point. These days getting people spend money on a camera is a huge challenge. Consumers spending on average is 14% lower than it was at the peak. The major studios are laying off people and slashing production budgets.

The small independent producers are getting squeezed. The lower price point camera systems is where the action is.

Funniest post I've read all day... Yeah, I'm really going to not buy a camera that does 3K REDCODE at 120 fps because there's another camera on the market that does soft 1080p at 30p and distorts like hell whenever you pan...
