  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I WANT TO BUY A GOOD COLOR GRADING MONITOR. ANY SUGGESTION? BUDGET OR HIGH END.

Aren't apple displays only 6-bit?

I have the Colormunki, and have used pucks for decades to calibrate for printing to Epson ink jets, and it has worked very well. I even used a spectrophotometer about 10 years ago (grandaddy of the i1pro) and made my own paper profiles for print; however, I have not done calibration for my new pursuits in video.

X-rite advertises that the i1Pro can calibrate to rec -709, NTSC, or SECAM-PAL. Do I understand correctly that the Cinema Display, fed from my GTX-570 (Flashed by Mac-Vid) will still not display correctly for video because it is a data feed rather than a video feed from a Kona or AJA or Matrox output?

I know some of the laptop screens are definitely 6-bit, not sure about the others

Working last year at Light Iron with Paul Geffre on final output and recall him telling me the Dolby monitor we were using was the nicest one in the building. My latest color session last month at Light Iron was using the same monitor with Paul Sage and Emily Eddey. It is everything they say it is and noticeably better. It should be for that $50,000 plus price tag. Found this neat link on the Dolby site featuring Michael talking about it. Those guys have all the cool toys.

Harcharan,

You have been ignoring ALL of my emails for the last 4+ months. I sold you an ALURA and used my FedEX account to pay for your shipping fees that you promised to reimburse me with. $328.00 US. I didn't want to have to post on Reduser everywhere and I warned you I would if you didn't pay me back for this, but with my exhausted efforts to request for my $, you have failed to perform and communicate with me.

Apple LED/TB Displays are 8bit = 16million colors, calibration would be software only and the computer's graphics card compensates to the best of its ability. Its possible apple uses 10bit processing, but the display is still only 8bit.

I do my work on the Apple LED 27" and it's great. Am transferring a project to a properly calibrated suite and to my eye my files look exactly the same there.
I'd be curious to hear how you calibrate the Apple monitor.

Flanders Scientific is the way to go if you're on a budget. This one:

Seems to be the only monitor in it's pricerange that is both true 10-bit and supports all the cine and broadcast colourspaces.

I think the Sony OLEDs have better colour reproduction BUT the Sony rep I spoke to at BVE said the 17" model was REC709 only... anyone know if it can be calibrated for P3, etc?

Do we calibrate monitor to REC709 and leave it as such and no need to calibrate to P3 or DCI? Working on rec709 calibrated good enough for both TV and cinema? Nowdays DCP making software gives you the option to convert REC to XYZ is it ok to use these options?

Any good Panasonic Plasma for client monitor?

People are seriously using the Apple as a reference grading monitor? Feeding it from what? A proper SDI card? I have heard of people using computer monitors like the Dreamcolors and Eizos but at least they are 10 bit and both capable of showing REC709.

Yes because NEC ships them with their higher end monitors. I had heard Dell was now to on a couple of models but not sure. I have clients using them with the Dreamcolor displays and they were very easy to setup with the software. Colorimeters are the standard for display device calibration.

Eric, was your reply intended to me? What does NEC has to do with Apple?
