  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I own a GH-1 and MKii and this is how RED can truly seal the deal

Agreed. No one is competing with Red in the motion picture camera world at anything near the price yet. The still cams with video are toys by comparison.
Before we ask Red to compete in price vs sensor size with Canon et al, lets see Canon compete in video quality with Red, any model. I'm sorry, but Canon 5D video quality as far as aliasing, pixel structure , artifacts is little better than HDV. People are taken in by the strengths and advantages of the large sensor, but much of this is crippled by the line skipping and long GOP codec. The video quality is just not that good.

This is fair. A lot more worthy of discussion than the typical "omg look at thiz camruh man hur hur".

Yeah, the aliasing, bits of artifacting you can see every so often when pixel peeping, in comparison to a RAW image there's no comparison. That's on a technical level.

On the other hand, you've got people who don't pixel peep and audiences who don't care. So is it all that bad?

Especially as a replacement for hokey 35mm Adapter systems that've tided us over until now.

I agree. Big improvement over DOF adapters. Great camera for web videos and photojournalists.

Where the new dSLR HD video cameras WIN big over Red no matter how you cut it is,

Weight
Size
Startup Time
Ease of use

Of course Redcode trumps the hell out of H264. Nobody is saying that it isn't. All we want as consumers is for Scarlet to be at least equal if not triple the value/cost ratio. For just under $3k, the Canon 5D is smoking hot for what it is..

Kholi, the camera you request at the opening post is nearly the s35 Scarlet, that Red is allegedly going to charge $7k for, and you want it for less than half that. Hey, I'm right there with ya! But I somehow doubt Red is going to go for that. They seem pretty set on having the 2/3" be the ~$3k line and then really paying for full frame.

Nearly, yes. In all honesty, though, price isn't really a major factor. Timing is.

Now, it probably takes just as long to get out a camera that does what I outlined as opposed to the originally slated Scarlet, anyway. So it's kinda moot.

I'm more for these guys kicking out a Scarlet body sooner than later.

Price will come into play later on when it's actually announced and ready for pre-orders or shipping. And by then, what's going to be on the market and how hard will it be to justify the expense of an S35 Scarlet just to get the RAW @ 3K (or whatever resolution it'll end up being).

Will it be worth the 3,000 ~ 5,000 difference for the majority to have RAW and 3/4K? That's a question, not an answer. I personally wonder why bother when you can rent a RED and shoot everything else with the still-advancing and low-priced VDSLR technology.

Just thinking out loud. Thanks for the mature response, Shawn.

Yes, yes yes yes. I totally agree with this. Carry the MKii around in a Photographers bookbag, whip it out and shoot. Can't get much easier than that!

Wow. It's utterly ridiculous and impractical, but still wow. It boggles the mind why anyone would spend so much on cine glass just to put it on a gh1 though.

You could buy the PL glass with a view to future RED purchase while using it on a GH1. Makes more sense than sticking a $4k DOF adapter on a sub $1k handycam. I can see it now, $22k for a set of RPP primes, $2k+ for GH1 and adapter.

Personally I'd spend 22 on the RED one and then another 2k on Nikon/canon glass and an adapter, but to each his own I suppose.

As a new proud owner of a 5D Mark II and an owner of the Red One, I completely agree with this thread. The 3k Fixed Lens Scarlet, even though Redcode, seems outdated already.

I've been accused already of being biased, so I'll try to make this comparison as objective as possible:

Canon: 1080p at 30fps H.264
Scarlet 2/3": 3K at 120fps REDCODE RAW

Scarlet has a frame rate four times faster and a frame size that's 2.6 times bigger than the canon. Then there's the codec... Sure, I'd like a 35mm Scarlet as much as anybody else, but you can hardly call Scarlet anything near 'outdated'... Not to mention that we haven't even got the final specs...

Well it has pixel resolution 2.6 times larger, not a frame size(which is substantially smaller), but your other points remain.

i don't think its fair to say the scarlet is outdated, but certainly as it stands right now it is becoming less impressive every day as newer, better, and cheaper cameras start emerging and the scarlet is still a ways a way. I can see how people may not feel its as groundbreaking anymore as when it was first announced. But the scarlet has the advantage of being designed as a cine camera and not just having a cine function and that can be seen in its codec and its framerate capabilities. I just wish it would come out already because i'm getting impatient and these new DSLR's are starting to sound better and better to me...

Only if the Scarlet existed...

It is a lot like a fairy... mythical at this point.

Yeah, I was referring to resolution of each frame, not the physical size of the sensor.
How is 3K 2.6 times the resolution of 1080P?

2.6 times 1080P would be 5K if my math is correct.

Well at this point it's worth pointing out that Scarlet, once it's fully resolved will be best at 2.1K.

But I suppose one could also point out that due to line skipping the 5DII is really only good for 720

I guess outdated was a poor word choice. I love Red. But Canon did something special with the 5D. Red needs to answer their calling.. We need a lightweight, portable camera that's cheap and awesome... All I'm sayin.. Jim, I know you're listening..
