  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I just want a shot

I really would have helped the guy out myself, why are people on here so elitist sometimes?

BTW can anyone explain to me why WC is banned on this forum, I totally missed that one.

Fer Christ sake! Someone in fucking Dallas let this dude use a red for a day. What is the big deal?

Because neither time or money is free!!! How would you feel if some random on the street came up to you and ask you for a thousand bucks? Or heck, could you give me five thousand bucks while you're at it? And demands that without much at all in the way of explanation or reasoning why, other than his own selfish desire, and offers absolutely nothing at all in return.

Frankly I'm surprised at how kind the response has been to him in this thread, it is a credit to this forum.

I think one of the most key points to take from this is try to offer something in return: such as working as a 1st AC for a local RED owner, likely once you've built up that relationship with him you'll be able to then use it once on a pet project.

Also, you don't have to get a RED to see a big leap forward from your 7D. Heck, even another stills camera such as an A7s/GH4/NX1 can be a large leap forward. Or go for a BMPCC (or the new BMMCC), which is a common choice with higher end real estate shoots. And its small size makes it awesome for fast gimbal, slider, jib, and drone work which is all common on real estate shoots.

Well I know for a fact that unless some people had lent me their kit when I was early on, I guess there wouldn't even have been an early on...

That is an opt-out scenario. Someone posing a simple request on a forum is an opt-in scenario. And as I wrote earlier, I'd be happy to lend the OP a RED if I had one, if he would be willing to travel.

I am not surprised in the slightest. People on here are on the whole pretty generous. That fact is the real credit to this forum.

You are completely right on that point. And you don't have to spend a lot, either. Even zero budget productions can do better than a 7D in 2015.

Yeah I would feel a little weird if some random person off the street came up and asked me for a thousand bucks. But I would feel less weird if that person and I were in a BMW car club together and he asked if he could drive my newer version of the 3 series. Just so he could experience a newer one and compare it to the one he has.

I'm not a random guy that haphazardly chose this forum and asked if I could have someone's camera. No, I have been on this forum for a couple years and was on track to have owned a Red by now but circumstances beyond my control have prevented that. I decided to take a chance and see if there was anyone that would be willing to spend some time with me and their Red. Yes, I should have lead off with, "we can work out something in trade", which I am willing to do. I've also noted that I want that person there with me and I'm not asking to drive off with your camera. No way would I let someone do that and no way would I expect someone to do that.

I'd like to address your comment, "And demands that without much at all in the way of explanation or reasoning why, other than his own selfish desire..." Well I kinda figured that was assumed. Also I didn't demand it, I asked. And if you read my entire original post I do explain why I want to shoot with one.

I've also stated that this is not because I can't afford to rent a Red, I have the means to do so but at this time those means have been tied up toward another obligation. I was hoping to get some experience with a Red sooner rather than later after this obligation has been taken care of.

But the beauty of this whole thing is this... someone did come through and offered yesterday. I'm anxious and excited to be able to finally gain some experience shooting a Red. The only problem I can see is it might fuel the fire in me to have one a lot more. Not sure my wife can take more of that. :)

Thank you, everyone for the advice, words of wisdom, and most all the support that I've felt from so many of you. A special thanks to all who have reached out and offered to take me up on my request. I do hope to get to some of these cities to meet you all face to face one day. The caliber of people on this forum is amazing. It's one of the things that drew me to Red in the first place.

It blows me away that I can jump on here and speak directly to the guys that are making beautiful images with this system. And further more I can interact with the president and all the higher-ups at Red. They listen to their customers and are right there in the trenches with you. And the best of the best are keen to hold conversations with the "lowly" like me and make me feel welcome. So my apologies if any of my responses were snarky, rude or defensive toward the ones I felt were trying to discourage me. Your words of wisdom have not gone unheeded.

A special thanks to Jake who reached out and offered to give me my shot. It is a gesture that I do not take lightly and I'm anxious to get started. Thank you again, Jake.

And thank you to everyone that contributed to this post. Happy filming and I wish all you guys the best.
