Went to see Gravity Tonight, and huge across the screen came presented in "Sony 4K" and internally, a little nerdy child went insane!

The first time i've seen a 4K projection in a real theatre. AMC on 84th street in NYC.

Gravity was insane... best movie in ages.

But it didnt seem super sharp. The screen was enormous. Granted it looked great, just not the tack sharpness i was expecting. I chalked it up to the screen size.

Get home, looked it up Gravity is finished in 2k.... Facepalm. Shot on Alexa. It looked great... but if its gonna be shown in 4K, Dammit, i want it shot in 4K!!!!

Thanks Timur,
Will go to 84th this weekend

And it should be seen in 3D! Cuarón's long tracking shots make complete use of the format. This is quite possibly the first movie where 3D is not only completely justified, but necessary to completely appreciate the premise and story-telling.

In my opinion, Sony allowing this to happen does more damage to Red than anything else they have done.

All AMC theatres are equipped with Sony 4K projectors now. The real problem is whether or not they show a 2K DCP of a film that has a 4K one available. You can often go to these theatres where they have one or two screens with all the bells and whistles along with a bunch of normal ones only to show the shittiest low-end movies on them while the adjacent screens are showing what you should be seeing on that HQ screen.

4k projector is one thing 4k finnish is something else. At least there is a projector that oversample instead of the opposite. I think this film would have post cost that would be about 6 times as high if they went for a 4k finnish. All the roto work and all the CG would really be tough to chew if the resolution was brought up to 4 times the pixel count. As it is for these films they normally burn the money at hand. So if you are saying you want a 4k finnish, then thats is pretty much the same thing as saying I do not care if the actual shown VFX work is 1/5 as good as you just saw it. Since as it's actually so that the "VFX creative quality" is pretty much the only corner to cut when you up the bit depth or pixel count for post. So if a given sum of money gives you VFX at a certain level... Then the same VFX work but mad at a higher pixel count done for the same budget will be quadruple less creative, it's that simple. So for most times I think VFX heavy films actually gain from having a 2k Finnish and be seen on smaller screens as there is simply not enough money to do the grand finnish sadly.

Have not seen the film my self but read a lot of the bts stuff love what Bot & dolly brought to the table. It actually made me go and order one of those Industrial Moco Robots, Cant wait to get it home. Then I just have to figure out how to make justice for building one of those LED / plasma screen light boxes they used :)

Not sure what you mean here. What does this have to do with Red?

I guess he means showing 2k material on a 4k projector with a 4k stamp on it. Kind of makes 4k look "no better than 2k" for the people that does not get to much into the tech details and knows that it's not a 4k all the way trough production.

Great movie, and one that you definitely want to see on as large/high res a screen as you can get to. I absolutely LOVED how it was shot, I read somewhere there were only around 150 cuts total in the film... and it gave it a feel that was different than most films today, I really enjoyed the change. Story was also decent, and while the physicist in me cringed a bit at some of the action sequences, my quibbles were swamped by amazing earth panorama's, engaging characters and crisp effects work.

I think you've got it the other way around. Even if they're showing a 2K DCP on that Sony 4K projector it looks way better than the older 2K projectors out there. Sony is obviously making every attempt to let the audience know that 4K is worth paying for. This is something that I believe every REDUSER has been asking for. It's just more 4K PR. That's gotta be a good thing, right?

Maybe so but saying upscaled 2k is 4k is not really speaking straight. So preferably they would say projected in 4k shot and/or finished in 2k, but I think that is not really the kind of info the general public is really interested in.

But, to me it's a bit like having THX surround sound in the theater and show that logo and then play out a normal stereo sound from only the front speakers... that will not really help people that spend their dollars trying to improve audio and mixing in THX standard will it...

It's a technical point, but a good one to make. It would be nice if a production had a "Mastered and Presented in 4K" icon that they could slap on at the end of the credits.

Sorry but -- what are you talking about? This to me sounds slightly off base, like if the base were on Earth you'd be on Endor (a joke)

I'd rather they have a logo that says "This is a really good movie" at the end, which would mean more to me.

I don't think the 4K makes the movie even 1% better. Gravity is already up to $450M worldwide and has gotten rave reviews top to bottom, particularly for its cinematography (much of which is photorealistic CG). 4K ain't gonna necessarily get you a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is where Gravity is right now... an unprecedented high rating for a mass-market film. It's a beautiful, beautiful film, all shot on Alexa, and I suspect if they had aimed for a 4K workflow from end-to-end, we'd be waiting another 6 months to see this film released.

As far as I know, Red's #1 goal is to get all movies to be shown in 4k. Sony is effectively running a misinformation campaign by telling moviegoers that everything shown on their projectors is equally 4k. Sony should have programmed their DCP players to determine if a DCP is 4k and only display the appropriate graphic, but they chose not to.
