  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I AM MOT HAPPY

Some update:
1. The monitor need to be changed (third monitor now....)
2. The time code problem I have (get stucked when you move the camera) has not been yet identified...
3. The camera...well, now my camera is already old...going through all this...
I just HOPE that the fct that they stop the production is not becaouse the new SW will be shipped with a new sensor insied otherwise I will be FURIOUS!!

Honeslty..is like a Love/Hate feeling now....

I kind of made the same experiences with my Scarlet-W and coming from a RED Epic Dragon it really felt like the monitor got way too hot. I played around with the fan-settings and the target temperature and figured out that 46°C was the best setting for me since the fans didn't have to work as much as with 38°C.

The monitor is still really hot but it got better with these settings.

But still - if you found a solution, let me know.
 
so i do not own one of the new monitors, but it would make sense that a monitor plugged directly into the top of the camera might get hot.. has anyone attempted to move the new 4.7 monitor off the camera body with the lemo adapters? might help
 
Hi Gerrit, I have set the temperature to 39/40 which they say should be the best setting, but again my monitor was really hot after 20 min was impossible to touch,I will get a new one so hopefully will be ok. The problem is...how long the electronic part in the monitor can work after this continuos hit?

Matthew, yes that can be a solution, hopefully someone from Red can give some advice about that,thanks
 
I'm actually about to get the 4.7 on accessory credit, is the heating an isolated issue that isn't normal or is it normal on all 4.7s?
 
I heard a lot of people having this problem, but is not normal to me. I don't think that the monitor will last longer to this temperature,also at one point you can't even touch it...
 
Apparently Brent had Christine Owens contact me today. She started an RMA for my 4.7 LCD without me initiating it. (Thanks Brent. Knowing you guys are looking out for us is really awesome)

I apologize for not getting back sooner but Ive been busy with post and shooting a lot the past few weeks. As of typing this I have not updated to the latest July 29th Firmware 6.3.27. I am still running the June 23rd 6.3.17 firmware release. My fan temp is set to 40c (default) and the LCD has been detached from the body now for weeks. It still runs very hot.

Lets go in some detail for the engineers troubleshooting this problem.

Case Study 1
Shooting indoors 70-80 degrees on a sound stage. Camera performed perfectly during the shoot all day. Zero problems. The only thing that we experienced all day was the monitor/LCD running extremely hot. We didn't have a lot of down time from shooting so if the camera wasn't rolling it was idle while lighting the setup & rehearsing, and of course it was off during lunch. RED bricks have been lasting average of 2 hours and I believe we did 4 battery changes that day. The backside of the LCD is what starts getting hot first. About 20 minutes after being on the backside is nearly too hot to touch. Recording or Idle. You can touch it, but its not like a warm blanket hot. its more like a hot coffee from Starbucks without the little cup sleeve.

Case Study 2
Shooting outdoors 85-95 degrees. Varying from full on direct sun, shaded, semi shaded lighting. Very Little down time but on this shoot. I kept the camera powered down anytime it was going to be more than 5 minutes between waiting. This was to conserve battery and to give the steadicam op a break too. I noticed the monitor was really hot when we were in the direct sunlight. A small flag over the camera whenever it wasnt rolling was the best we could do for the few shots in the direct sunlight we needed. During this time the LCD wasnt touchable without an extreme discomfort when touching. Especially when scrubbing through footage. The discomfort made me constantly checking my finger to see if it was truly burning me or if I had something on my finger causing some friction between the fingertip and screen. Very odd. It was like this the entire day. The Director and Steadicam Op both also commented on this as well. Both have used RED cameras for years now. The Steadicam Op owns the Scarlet-MX.

Case Study 3
Shooting Indoors 78 Degrees today inside my office after getting my email from Christine Owens w/ RMA dept. First I powered up the camera then let the camera sit there for a good 10-15 minutes idle before formatting the SSD, set to 5k 5:1 @ 23.976 I let it run the entire 128 Gb card up 2 times .I changed the battery 1 time. Its really hot again. When I touch the LCD for playback, and especially when scrubbing the clip its really hot. Good thing I own a digital IR thermometer so I have TEMP readings for you.
Back of the monitor - 104f-110f when recording, 99f-103f when IDLE. oh and crazy enough, this is all while sitting directly underneath one of the A/C Vents in my office. I wonder what Temps the monitor reached outside.

How safe is it for me to point this IR Therm directly at the LCD screen? Low powered Laser Pointers are pretty safe to point at LCDs but not sure if this is technically the same.

powering down camera now to install latest firmware then redoing the above case study. will update with temps in less than an hour.
 
updated firmware again.
slightly lower temp this time while recording. still reaching 104f-107f and then idle im getting 99-103f. tried both attached to the body and with LEMO adapter. Same results.

funny thing is, My Panasonic color monitor on my desk also runs 104f as well as my other Desktop LCD monitors all run 95f-104f so Im not sure this is outside of normal operating temps. is it?

These are after all small LCDs.
 
Sadly they said that they can't replicate the monitor issue at Red...this is very odd as my monitor had exaclty your same problem, I told them to install the new firmware and try again, still waiting, no idea what is happening.

So....today I had the good news that my camera has been tested a LOT and is all good, the monitor has been changed with a new one and hopefully all will be good :-)
all the guys at Red have been super helpful and I look forward now to finally shot some videos!
I always loved Red and for me this is a dream come true so you guys can understand how bad I felt with all the issue I had.

They change the monitor with a new batch shipped from the USA, it now should work, they also say that is normal that the monitor can get hot but not to much though...
I have notice that on the weapon they had the 7 inch monitor and it doesn't get to hot, probably as is bigger so the hit expands through all the surface?...I think we may think to purchase the bigger monitor in the future....
Anyway, if you have issue with the monitor you can send to them to check.
