  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Huge Weapon Mg Audio Issues

im personally more concerned about the scratch track audio, i never record my own audio, but post usually asks for a scratch track and im hearing that it's so faint and low it might also be unusable. hopefully that is a firmware fix though.

I love it.
Red fanboism is for real.

Instead of getting it right out of the gate, let's find a 3rd party workaround for things that were poorly conceived and designed in the first place and voila - it's a new camera feature!

Lemo cable poking in your eye when using EVF? No problem, somebody else fixed it for $599!
No phantom mic power? No worries, for $3950 you can have phantom power and 13 HDSDI and AUX outlets you don't need! And BTW, it's not available!
Can't shoot above 250ISO without noise? Change OLPFs constantly!

It's all about choices!

You guys crack me up.

Not sure what the point of this thread is, obviously there are both red and 3rd party modules for people that need professional xlr inputs. Is this a thread posing as a problem because the person doesn't want to buy the correct modules? If some has a problem with a mic, that should just go to your bomb squad guy and open a support ticket. I've noticed this trend in reduser of incorrect attention getting thread names.

Like I said, it's not the only thing "coming". And "poorly conveived" is more about perspective. To make the camera 2lbs lighter RED streamlined the body to a rather high level stripping things that weren't always needed in the trade off for lighter weight, which everybody benefits from when it comes down to it.

I'm not particularly fond of the term fanboy here, but I am a bit put off that "this accessory doesn't do exactly what I want and I'll ignore the 50 other ways to solve the workflow I desire because it isn't exactly what I want". At least that's exactly how it's coming off. If the accessory doesn't fit your needs, it doesn't fit your needs.

If in all honesty you are just looking for somebody to make a very simple and compact XLR Expander, just say it.

Mostly I was trying to help you solve your workflow issue. Lesson learned.

I will agree, that the REDVOLT Expander should have been released a while ago though.

The point of this thread is both of those things and the title of the thread is correct.

Point #1: Internal mics on my camera are faulty though almost everybody is reporting some kind of internal mic issues. My camera is going back to Red today for the internal mic fix.

Point #2: Basic audio features that we were enjoying on Epic/Scarlet/Dragon cameras are GONE and now come at the size/weight/$$$$ premiums.

Hope that clears it up.

I was kind of saying that Red should have done it with the Base Expander.
I'm sure WC will come up with a bolt-on workaround or some such but that's not the point.

When everything Red does is passionately defended, no matter how wrong, while pointing at $$$$$ 3rd party solutions, it's easy to perceive it as fanboism.

I appreciate it and I'm aware of the workarounds. My post was more about my surprise to find out that Red has taken these basic audio features from the camera that is supposed to be a step forward - not step back.

Right now the audio choices are either a bulkier/heavier camera with pro level sound (not currently available) or DSLR style consumer audio. Neither is acceptable, to be honest.

My internal mics on both weapons are fine, so if your having a problem then send it in - we are litterally in the first few batches of magnesium so I expect this type of thing. On you thinking your a better designer on the RED on modules, and that you want the more expensive module features on on the less expensive modules - that's not "Huge MG audio issues"

I'm Ok with the direction RED went with the Weapon bodies. Weight is key for me. The audio inputs on Epic, and now Weapon are fine as long as you feed it proper audio. Sure, Red One may have been even better, but thats beside the point. So Phantom power is no longer on the camera, thats fine because I don't want to hang a huge shotgun on my camera either. The external mics are indeed underwhelming, but they are good enough for scratch track. But you want better scratch track, the self powered Rode micpro is still the best option because of the size, and it will connect to the DSMC2 bodies with no fuss. Just like Epic, better inputs can be had using modules. Not everyone needs them, so you don't have to buy them.

Not being able to record the audio on a camera is kind of huge.

Thank you for your non-contribution to this thread.

Actually, I didn't need additional modules (discounting A-Box) on the Epic and the camera was still smaller lighter than a Weapon with RV Expander or OMOD XLR.

Versatility is the key. We just lost some. Oh well.

Hey Milan. I understand your frustration...but not paying nicely on this thread will probably just get it shut down, which is not what I'm guessing you want to happen. Bringing up concerns is great...it helps RED develop amazing products, but when you disrespect other users with comments, it does the exact opposite. Just my 2 cents

With all due respect Chris, Patrick's post was much more disrespectful than mine.
Seriously, WTH: "you thinking your a better designer on the RED on modules"

This happens on this forum constantly. People try to quiet those with legitimate concerns or complains.

Im not expecting a solution from Red as a result of this thread, I'm just venting my frustration with paying $$$$$$ to go through this.

Sincerely,

Red Beta Tester since 2008

In the audio world, we call DSLRs "toy cameras"

DSMC2 isn't a toy.

DSMC2 is not a recorder made for audio. But you have the choice to take a "better audio" module if you want to record some audio on better standards as the mic level minijack. Toy is how you use your tool not the tool.

Hello all,
I want to be sure I understand what's going on in this thread. I have on order a Scarlet-W. My understanding is that although it does not have phantom power, it is supposed to have excellent pre-amps. Since I have self-powered mics, can I not enjoy professional sound from this camera through the 3.5mm plug and an xlr connection? Thanks.

Yes you can. You don't need phantom with self powered mics. I'm telling you I just did a shoot to cam where audio sounded perfect.

It depends on the module you use. But the base module has a stereo mic level (unbalanced) input, your selfpowered mic should work. Some may see this as a non professional audio input (not ballanced, no 48V power) but it's usuable. Now the preamp quality is another story. But I would use the camera sound as an editing/offline track.

Thanks. Balanced would have been better. Have you or anyone noticed any hum?

Why not try a battery belt clip and vmounts instead of rv expander? Does it not work woth weapon? Always find it interesting how few people realise how great it is I even made a clip for it to attach to the back of the camera, and I have a lens belt that I put it on when I want a lighter more mobile setup, or clip it to my tripod when stationary. Also as I have been shooting a lot in cold conditions this year it allows me to put the batteries in my jacket and stay warm while powering te camera reducing battery drain greatly. May not be perfect but a great way to get power in a versatile and affordable way. Sorry to hear about the other issues can't speak to them or a solution as I have yet to own or use a weapon.

Have a good one! And stay passionate!
