  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How's that new redcine coming?

I agree with Luki. We use REDCINE to check files after the shoot and not being able to have audio playback is a real shame. We're using Macbooks so there is always the option of reading the QT files but it's simply not as practical. Also REDCINE allows you to do some very quick corrections before playing the footage to show the director what it will really look like.

That's just a detail of course. On a larger scale, workflow issues are still scaring most producers who want to shoot RED and don't have access to a Scratch system.

So, I guess that's it. Red isn't going to make a new redcine. i guess I'm the naive one. Once again the post side gets the shaft and I along with many other Red owners get to make up excuses for the state of its backend workflow. I guess I just won't be able to rent the camera out for as many productions until Apple and Adobe actually have native r3d support. Thanks.

You can make excuses if you want and wait for a free tool to solve all your problems...

or...

You can make use of Redcine, Red Alert, Redline, Red Rushes, Final Cut Pro, and SCRATCH as you see fit to make good, solid workflows for editorial and finishing.

Sort of like Plaster City, Off Hollywood, Cineworks, Technicolor, Sysmic Films, R!OT, Ghost, HollywoodDI, Fini Films, Oriental Post, Mercury Entertainment, Local Hero, 12Forward, Logan Productions, Encore, Complete Post, Lemac, Bean, Toybox, and many others have done.

Your choice.

Hi Lucas:

Approximately how much is ScratchCine and where is the best place to buy in Arizona? Send PM please.

Don't you think it's a little far fetched to consider that ownership of Scratch is down to personal choice? If it was costing $3000 i would agree with you but at $75K your comment sounds a little pretentious.

Miltos

SCRATCH wasn't the only tool I listed...

...and it was published on Reduser many times around NAB that a *turnkey* SCRATCH-CINE with Skulltrail hardware was $35K.

Scratch is an amazing tool but WAY out of a lot of people's league. Truth is anyway, you just need it mostly if you go back to film and get a release, by which point you get a distributor that will finance that Scratch session (or station, if really nice) so no worries about having a Scratch or not. A LOT can be achieved without it for a final master on HD with other affordable tools, even for a really clean HD screening like Sundance or else...

But can't someone just get his hands into Redcine and make the sound work? (and stop these reccuring threads in the process ;) Is there any SDK? :nerd:

If guys managed to pull softwares like Crimson and Monkey (no sound, I know, different use, etc) just how hard is it to "plug" the sound in, considering it is already side by side with the image when shot? I'm sure Red can and will do that someday. I mean, no one is asking for a Redcine with a Protools like menu, just sound... For those who need to show quick and good looking AND sounding dailies to people... :)

I'm not crying for it, I don't really need it, but who can do more can do less...

As an offline editor I need sound, I don't have any use for Scratch and I don't have the money for it. If the posthouse use Scratch, fine, but I'm not and it feels rather unsettling that a simple thing like fixing audio in redcine isn't a priority at Red.

It means that if you have a PC based workflow you can only work with Red One if you pay for Scratch.

Isn't it time to just fix this? What is really so hard about getting audio that sticks with the output from Redcine?
Please enlight me on why a PC only workflow can't be as cheap as on a Mac?

Pretty difficult if you are running Windows. Remember, the QT Ref files are OSX-only.

just a point.....I discovered you can open the QT referance files in windows....you only see 4K of black...but you can export the wav file from it with quicktime pro...

hmmm...
when I opened the quicktime proxy on my laptop I got a 4k black screen...and did extract audio from it....

I cannot seem to on my vista 64 desktop....but i definately did on my other system

EDIT** tested again and it still works on my laptop...quicktime 7.4.5 on vista 32

I don't for one moment think that Red want to give the impression that if you are not Mac based - don't bother getting a Red camera - or even that PC users are second class citizens. However, sometimes it does seem a bit that way.

Not that I am complaining. I have learned to use RedCine and I like it. I use a Windows NLE, Leitch Velocity HD which gives me 1080 in realtime and as my final deliverable is HD I don't need to use proxies; I can do all post within Velocity (Fusion is built-in) so I use RedCine as a first colour check, crop and adjust - and then output to the final form.

I say all this to encourage Red to continue supporting PC/Windows users and maintain the development of RedCine
