How useful is the Redmote?

I've ordered a Scarlett along with some other items, including the touchscreen and the side handle. My question to Epic owners who have had their cams awhile and who have the Redmote: How often do you use it? When/why do you use it over the touchscreen or sidehandle? The only reason I can see to purchase it is to be used with stills (long exposures) or if I've mounted the camera on a car or some other place where I don't have the ability to hit the record button - am I missing something?

I fully plan on purchasing the Redmote Pro when it comes out a year or more down the line and would like to get away without purchasing the Redmote if possible unless there are things I'm missing in it's usefulness on set.

Thanks for your replies.

I find it extremely useful as a DoP who wants to control the elements of the camera quickly in the background whilst the operator is busy on the Bomb EVF. Or the FP is doing something or the Director is just too close to the camera. Also useful when it gets cold and the LCD isn't too responsive, but I use the side handle for this also.

When you need it, you really need it... When I shoot steadicam I don't op any more due to back problems, but I can use the Redmote to satisfy the control freak in me. For jib work its great too, and I've also found for certain specific studio work where the camera is locked off or rigged very precisely I can trigger record and adjust settings without causing momentary vibrations or otherwise disrupting a finely arranged setup.

If I were equipping to shoot on a budget it would be lower on the list than the LCD or sidehandle IMHO.

The redmote is very useful for situations when the camera needs to be controlled remotely. It has a great interface and controls all the basic settings of the camera. I wish it worked all the time though. It is really not reliable in my experience. Personally, I think an adapter that would allow it run hardwired to the camera would make it much more useful. It was a bit spastic today when controlling a camera on an ultimate arm. Even so, it works better than the Alexamote:)

its only $550... and kicks ass... I MUCH prefer it to side handle... but then we shoot mostly cinestyle. where side handle is just in the way

Dont recall what the Redmote Pro does? What extra features?

Was there not talk of an iPad and iPhone app? in which case that would be not only cheaper, but more upgradable?

and if iPad then even bigger and more rich feature set?

I am looking at buying one for two reasons:

1. The price will go up 50% and will be better for rental
2. For the times Scarlet is on a jib, or crane etc.

I would imagine that what ever is used for wireless, could be extended via some him or router? does it not use some form of wifi?

thoughts?

Very useful bordering on essential. Just did some hood mount shots and I could duck in the back seat and roll/stop as well as watch the histogram. Also great when the eyepiece is occupied by an operator and the AC needs to check/change something.

It's pretty useful but is currently not reliable. Loses its connection a lot and has difficulty reconnecting. For some reason mine works remotely but when I dock it it doesn't work. If you are going to choose one other way besides the LCD to control the camera, I would go with the side handle.

I was just on a shoot in Panama, shooting rain. The epic was completely closed off, with just air for venting, with a Spintech on top.

Having the redmote, and being able to change every setting quickly, and just a quick look at the evf to format, was a Godsend.

I'll be ordering my REDmote for Scarlet ASAP.

Significantly better range is coming.
I showed a sample of this at the nov 3rd event.

Good to hear about the better range. My redmote connects most of the time but once I dock it it reads "docked" but offers on control over the camera or metadata info at all. Reinstalled firmware on redmote and camera. Any ideas?

Do you see status on the redmote?

Honestly...

It's cool as hell

BUT

I don't know about other people's experience - but it is glitchy as hell!

I had to send the whole camera in with the redmote to get fixed and within a short time it was back to glitchy as hell

Camera works great without it

I'm sending it again this week (camera and all) because when it works it's cool as hell!

My experience as well, but on those occasions when nothing else will do the job, I can forgive those lost connections. When shooting aerials recently, it was the only way to control the camera mounted externally on the plane. Great to be able to alter frame rate etc from inside the cabin :)

I think the REDmote is very useful. It's latest Firmware is a huge improvement on range and reliability. Way more useful then the side handle for controlling the camera. It has saved me on a couple of shoots. Example: On one shoot the AC accidently set the LCD/EVF out to clean as well as the HD-SDI out to clean. So we couldn't undo this with the touchscreen and the side handle because we couldn't see the menus. Not a problem though because we could just use the REDmote so set everything right.
