  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Some things are beyond a simple compensation and need invariable technical skills. Us as members of RedUser and owners of Red Cameras, haven't ever met any of the people that have designed the Epic, then the DSMC2. My guess would be the cube architecture was so that you could add on accessories and custom build the shape of the Red to fit your need/application. e.g. you have it bare bones on a gimbal or in a tight spot in a car. but you can also add on and build it out ENG style or shoulder rig

(the caveat to all this is that camera shots haven't changed much and ways of shooting them hasn't changed)

the big questions is, is there a need to add a watercooled system to a Red Camera?
IMHO, I'd say no. There could be a situation where you have a 45 minute shot with Sound, but the actors and crew would be completely exhausted before the scene ended, so the fans should stay quiet for any normal shot

I'm probably based in this respect, but Linus doesn't seem to acknowledge or understand the needs of feature film crew in concern to cinema cameras

Jarred and Red are always posting a multitude of different camera builds they done over the years. If I remember right, one camera had fiber output to record externally. The Xenomorph had lens motors similar to an ENG cinema lens, wireless video, WIFI and fixed smart-side control with monitor... which is probably where the Ranger started.
(could be other ones that were posted and I've forgotten or never seen the daylight)

These mods are based on needs of productions, not whatever Linus is doing

IMHO, this stuff changes with each build and just what technology is available to Red at a reasonable cost. Seems like Linus looks at it with the perspective of a Desktop computer, where parts are generic and builds are universal. From what I understand, it isn't that way, because cinema cameras are built ad hominem in a small quantity for a niche market of professional camera departments.

Q: in opening it up would be could I replace certain parts and improve the camera?
A: probably much more complicated than that, if not impossible

I personally, don't have enough knowledge of camera engineering to actually understand the components placement in the camera. Also, not to red pill you, but I think you are being incredible generous in thinking that there's any insight into what going on in the Helium in that video

I think that if he blew up a new Lamboghini he would get more views. This is what his viewers are looking for. BTW I have not watch it and not planning to, I've already wasted 1 minute here haha...
 
An update to this thread.
After long 6 months they just finished reassembling the camera live on Youtube and (sorry for the spoiler) it actually worked!
And after this craziness, it seems, they are not done quite yet. Now they want to benchmark the reassembled camera performance and then they are planning to do what they originally planned to do- to make a water-cooled Red camera, so they then can compare it's performance with the standard air-cooled camera...

are the fans volume an issue for DSMC2 cameras or anything besides maybe the Red One MX?

is there sponsor Jinnimag?
 
I can understand cooling the camera more to get better performance but I don’t think they’ll get much better ISO performance than standard and I can imagine the reliability of the camera being a major issue with water cooling. I use the Corsair all-in-one coolers in a few of my computers just to save the headache of real water cooling which has messed up more than a few PCs for me but I still worry about those going out eventually. It is a fun and interesting video to watch if anybody hasn’t seen it yet, it surprises me that they’re even using 8K RED cameras for the channel but if they’ve got the financing to do so I wouldn’t blame them and I know I certainly would for 8K streams down the line.
 
I think a lot of people in this thread sound ignorant why they say " why are they using a red for youtube" None of you have probably worked with YouTube monetization but um... They make millions of dollars a year off these videos and sponsorships. Whats $50,000 on a camera that can be bought used for 25 these days. It gives them amazing quality and a bunch of other features. Maybe they transcend youtube one day and have an actual television show, who knows. That's like saying why would I buy a Mercedes to go to work when I can just buy a Toyota.
 
Linus is doing a great job communicating geekiness. Nothing wrong with that. And his company is up to +25 employees.
In that respect he has done better than many on monetising his RED.

Marques Brownlee is another prominent Tech YouTuber shooting RED.

I actually love their pragmatic approach to imagery.

Does it look cinematic?
No. Not at all!

Does it serve their purpose to have lit sets and high resolutions?
You betcha!

Does it sel RED additional cameras?
I'd believe so

Are these smart guys?
Of course they are!
Marques has gone a bit out of form and interviewed Bill Gates, Elon Musk and the like.
And the format expands.

None of us know where these guys will take their work, but they have arguably achieved more with their REDs than many others.

So why shouldn't they use them?
 
I have a confession...

I too use RED's to shoot YouTube videos. (as well as content for our OTT and cable channels) YouTube pays way more than I ever made in 'mainstream' serious filmaking or TV advertising.
It not only pays more, but I also work less and have more time to enjoy life without shuffling through the line for 2nd meal at 2am.

If that makes me a joke loser YouTuber - I'll take it!

I've always felt the best camera is the one that let's you tell your story in the best way possible. RED cameras are great at that, but if you're a solo operator and many of your shots are out of focus in your YT videos, then you've immediately failed and should look to other cameras. Focus/exposure are far worse than any artifacts you may get shooting on lesser cameras. I even feel some of the scenarios that Blackmagic advertises using the Pocket 4K are a bit ridiculous.

If this new lidar autofocus tech makes it into other cameras like RED or BM, there might be more of a market for these cameras as youtube cams.
 
Very disappointing what I am reading in this thread. A lot of elitist views regarding camera technology.

These creators simply want to capture the best image possible, for delivery on a platform that supports these high resolutions. So what if people then view that content on their mobile phones? My phone has a 2560 x 1440 screen in a 5.7" form factor. Find me a TV with that sort of PPI.

Regardless, it should be celebrated that the fantastic cameras RED make are so versatile, that they lend themselves to everything from Hollywood Blockbusters to online content.
