How to make money from internet distribution of movies?

the question of how and what kind of movies to make if you've got little or no money

it's easy to tailer your story or choosing one that suites ur budget. and available resources

Jamendo.com is interesting. I listened to some stuff there. But we'll be trying with music in Bulgarian, first.

They have English songs too.

***

The CCommons license means:

free for personal\non-commercial use, i.e. home listening\enjoying. :)

If you want to use it on a project, you gotta contact the author.

***

The music won't be free, but it will be paid by the advertisers, not the users.

And it won't be completely free for the users either, cause they'll have to endure the banner(s).

That's why these banners have to be not-too-annoying.

Of course, you can release it completely for free [without banners]. But then you won't have profit. That's OK, if i that is your goal. There are all kinds of options.

For me, the goal is to keep the music free [cause it will be free no matter what we do :)], but also - to have some income from it.

Sounds absurd, but in theory - it's possible.

To repeat, the plan is:

1. Make a great song.

2. Convince an advertiser to sign a contract with you, according which, they'll start paying you only if the song becomes popular [number of views\downloads].

That's the main key to get the contract.

3. Negotiate the download page with the portal(s) you're uploading the song. Give them % of the deal.

4. Put an exclusive banner of your advertiser above the title of your song\music video.

5. Now wait.... [and try to popularize your song in every way: send it to radios, TVs, websites, producers, promoters, forums, etc.].

6. If\when the negotiated view\download count is reached: Start geting cash from the advertiser.

*

7. Make another great song\album.

8. Sign a sweeter deal. Get more cash.

9. Become famous. Go on a tour. Start performing on Giants Stadium, Wembley and where-not.

10. Become even more rich, spoiled and corrupt :).

*

(11. Do the same for your movies but - start 5 years from now  )

The key for all these is the No-Initial-Payment clause.

And great art-making, of course.

This is not true.
There are CCommons licenses where you can do what ever you want to do with a song… you don’t even have to get in contact with the artist as long you give the original author/artist credit.

...
Not just listen to the musik but look at the system of jamendo.com – it’s all there

They also have the idea to show advertising banners before you can download a song… Fact is, right now very few advertiser are seen there… but that could change of cause…

Of cause if you have a real number one song all will be totally different… good luck…

I think this is only for "free-culture" projects.

What if a big production company decides to use your song in a commercial shooting, which has a 50 000 $ budget. Don't you think that you'd deserve some of that cash?

Yes, that's the future, at least for indies. Forget about iTunes, unless some big-$$$ company or dude miraculously decides to invest in you.

I [we] don't know if it's a number one song, but (I) we sure hope that it is. :)

Thanks. :construction:

No, just read the license.

and

Of cause it would be just fair to give the artist some cash… but by license you not have to… that at least is the deal in theory.

BUT

We all agree you defiantly should give him some dough.

Have to add that there are other CCommons licenses which have different characteristics. Learn more about it here: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/

.

Right, there's the non-commercial one. You reg it like that and you're ready to fly.

Believe it or not, there are quit a few CC licensed songs which have been used commercially.

And believe it or not, quit a few of the musician who publish their songs under CC licenses have the hope finally to earn money with their music (but they really don’t in general, I guess). Will they ever get famous instead?

Interesting song... :)

So, we have corporate interest on one side... democracy and human rights, on the other...

The way to make money from internet distribution of movies - will be - give away lower quality versions of your film via download for free - and DIRECT SELL REDRAY 4K discs for $$ - over the internet - "add to shopping cart" - without a "distribution company".

It's a matter of marketing. How do people know about your film? If they can watch a lower quality web download for free - if it's good - they will want it in full quality - with "added value - additional content" - and they will pay.

If you movie sucks ... well ...

Laugh all you want, but 4K is coming to the home.

Yeah, but they'll hack the 4K too... and 4K will also be available for free...

I can't see what is going to stop this.

I agree with this. That's why I think the producer/director/writer Indy movie-makers who are the most successful will be the ones who can write and tell the story in the most efficient way.

I agree with Mark's approach. I once tried to get an (IMO talented) young singer's mother/manager to let some friend upload a few of her songs onto Napster. She wouldn't do it, preferring to guard the rights to her songs like a Doberman and continue selling CD's out of the trunk of her car. I haven't heard anything professionally of them in years. I think they went out of business.

COINCIDENCE!? I think NOT!

OK, I guess that I probably don't attract the most positive emotions with my meditations on these matters.

But I have to remind you, that I'm not the reason for these things. :)

I'm just an observer. A regular "drug"-addict.

No matter what: Low-quality, HD, 4K, (whatever)-K... Someone will hack everything... and we have the Internet, where everywhere is everywhere... Practically, there are no boundaries in the net...

***

Ok, first... let's forget about Bulgaria and all the similar "Nowhere" destinations...

Then,... since the USA is the nation which still sets the standards for these things, I'd like to ask... three "evil" questions:

1. What is the percentage of US citizens that download and use "pirated" films\music? [I personally don't know, but I can give a very good guess for Bulgarian percentages :)]

2. Is this number increasing or decreasing?

3. And if it is - by any chance - increasing, what can be done to stop this process, without hurting democracy and the rights of citizens?

The Internet changes everything...

Best hope for the little guy is to sell Blurays (saving a long download time for the consumer) or maybe offering very, very high-speed, direct downloads of the content for like a couple of dollars. If you offer an HD movie to a guy for 3 bucks that he can download legally at 2MB/s vs having to take two days to download it illegally off bit torrents at 350KB/s, he might go for it.

What made games digital distribution get so popular over the years?
STEAM.

What is STEAM? A nicely planned platform, easy to use, that you feel like you own your games.

You can re-download anytime, anywhere.

Maybe what's lacking is some big guy to start a decent platform for film digital distribution.

Hmmm, why not STEAM itself? I'll be emailing Gabe right now, bye.

You got the message of the song… This are the right questions!

What happened to the music industry through the internet will happen to the film industry as well, it is just a matter of time.
Ok, to download a 4k movie will still require quit something, but will not be impossible in the near future, and defiantly normal in the far future… just give the engineers some years.

It's a matter of marketing. How do people know about your film?

Marketing is the keyword.

Think of the movie entertainment like of the element “water”.
In the future movies will be there like you find water nearly anywhere for free. Despite of this, people still pay for the water they like to drink. That’s how it will work with movies too. Just with the plain resource “movie” – it will get harder and harder to earn money but if you offer special services around it, you will make your deal.

Hi. What special services could that be?

Well think about how it works with the water ;-)

Water comes out of the pipe for almost for free... but...

People want to be sure they think good water... so if you can offer a service for good and special water you are in business

Rain water drops from the sky for free... if you can offer a service to collect this water efficient and refine it than you have a business...

Of cause there are also dessert areas... find them, and come up with a service to provide these areas with water and you are in business

There are many other things you can think of... got the idea? ;-)

Keeping by film this is getting harder than with water. Behind the scenes montage? Free music tracks from the indie band you play in your film? What else can you imagine?
