  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How to grade to look like RAW?

I believe what Yean meant was the "look" he gets when he switch to "raw view" mode on his camera. It's not exactly the redlogfilm/redcolor look.

Yup, the RAW camera view is exactly what i'm after. The before 'debayered' image.

320 iso
5000k (the sensors native wb)
rc 3
redlogfilm
saturation .75
contrast .90

you can do this with your metadata in the camera until when you switch in and out of RAW view you no longer see a shift in the image. Your metadata then becomes a simulation of raw view and the intended look from the set.

just create a metadata look that looks like raw.

Not to nitpick, but it is Debayered (you see colors, right) it is also not RAW, as that would be "Linear" and it is definitely matrixed, but I understand that that is all irrelevant for the "look" you want.

But "RAW view" is just that, a set of metadata giving a given look....

you're right Gunleik. in my haste, i don't think!

But we are on the same page regarding the 'Look' that i want.

Is it me or just my camera but I think the camera's raw view is taking whatever gamma/color matrix you currently have on the camera and just shows a 320ISO/4800WB/0 TINT version of it? I could pretty much make my video/raw look exactly the same by setting my metadata as such (ie. histogram does not change when I switch between the 2 mode).

Are you finishing in HD? If so - you can just play the footage in camera wile monitoring RAW and record the uncompressed SDI signal on a 10-bit capture card...
This also eliminates the need for a RED ROCKET.... ;o)

Peter

Not true, the playback output via HDSDI is not full debayer and only 720p. That's my experience anyway. Different story while actually recording though...but during payback it's no good.

Could you just record the raw monitor feed from the camera sdi and use this as a reference for the colourist to match to?
