I thought the Raven didn't have mics, but when checking the tech specs they seem to have it, although, even on the Weapon the sound is terrible. It's only meant for scratch audio. These cameras are cinema cameras, i.e they're meant to be used with external recorders and sound teams.

YA, but there is no sound recorded, so Why ?? how can I record the sound ??

Just go into audio settings and map internal mics to channel 1&2 (or 3/4 if you prefer).

Settings -> Audio -> Control -> Channel 1/2 -> Internal

Chanell 1/2 source is on Internal
Channel 2/3 is on external (the base expander)

No sound is recorded

There are audio meters on the LCD. When the internal mic is enabled and the gain is turned up all the way and you stand beside the camera and talk you should see the audio meters registering. The audio captured by the camera is not very loud, even with gain turned up, but should be audible for matching dual system sound in post. Wooden Camera has the o-box that allows for XLR mics to be inserted into the 3.5mm jack on the back of the base expander. I always record double-system sound (plug my XLR mic into a sound recorder), but if I want a stronger internal mic I plug in my mini Sennheiser shotgun mic (has a 3.5mm port) directly into the base expander. You shouldn't have to bring the footage into REDCine to see if it recorded audio, the audio meters should help you out. The mics are on the front of the camera, under the lens mount.

Red and other sell mini jack to xlr that works perfectly of you just want a shotgun mic or wireless mic straight into camera. Use it all the time. I also have a wireless receiver feeding the sound mix from the sound recordist so the files have proper sound to start the edit.

You have built-in scratch mics on the Raven. You just have to define which channel pair (1/2 or 3/4) you want those mics to record to. Alternatively, you can plug in an unbalanced mic level source into the rear I/O 3.5mm mini jack and record both sources.

Unlike DSMC 1, with DSMC 2 you don't need to modify audio cables, or use special tip/ring/sleeve adapters.

I used this adapter to go from 3.5mm to dual XLR and it works perfectly with the Raven

I've heard acceptable sound on Red Epic and Red Dragon before, assuming great sound prior to the input. But I'd agree that it's better to use external audio recorders. For some applications (warfare, guerilla documentaries, hidden camera, fast-paced news events), I think even I can forgive sometimes recording sound on camera.

I have had cases where the external audio recorder failed on one shot due to a crash, and only because we had camera audio as a backup were we saved. So camera audio is very, very useful for that.

I have a Raven and also noticed that I can see the meters on the monitor but you can barley hear the audio. I contacted Red and they wanted sample clips to see if they could see a what the problem was with the camera. I never sent in the footage to red, after talking to other Raven users it seems the audio is barley there. Its is only supposed to be for "scratch audio". It seems strange to me that those mics can't even pick up audio as well as any crap point and shoot camera. Maybe I will stop being lazy and send in a clip to red see if there is a problem.

I would assume the V lock IO has decent audio in, at least on the level of any 3.5mm input to a camera?
