  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I just ran through this workflow and it worked beautifully!

My current Setup:
MacOS 10.6
RedcineX 351
Driver: 1.3.5.0
Firmware: 1.1.10.1

Here are the steps I took:
1.
- Select File - Import - EDL

2.
- Set master media location by clicking the change button.
- Ensure Absolute is set for TC
- Ensure FPS is set to 23.98
- Set destination to Active Bin

3.
- Select your EDL and hit Open

4.
- All clips will load into your Active Bin

This workflow didnt work when I tried it on al older version of RedcineX as it wouldnt look within Subfolders for my masters. But within the newest version it worked perfectly to my bin and also to my timeline.

Hope that helps.

Also the fcp xml works fine. You can import directly a fcp timeline of prores and RCX replaces them with r3d files. It works best with one video track only.

I got it to work with an EDL from Media Composer (16 character source) but it didn't relink and I had to select each one by hand. I will try the steps outlined above to see if I did something wrong in the source file selection.

The example I provided above was an EDL created from FCP. So I am curious to hear if your EDL from Avid works Michael.

Any older version then 351 was making me move the R3D files to the top directory of where I was pointing it as it wouldn't look into sub directories.

I edited my 16Char EDL to look like an FCP EDL, (8 character source and comment containing filename as clip name) and it worked like a charm. I don't think a straight up 16 character source EDL is working yet, but I heard they were working on it. I was just hoping it was in the 348 build!

Hi Michael,

16 char EDL should be working just fine. If you have an example of a 16 char EDL that doesn't work, please send it to redcinex at red dot com.

Cheers,
David

I just sent a two event EDL as an example.

Hi
Is this Avid EDL import also supposed to work on the Window side?

I got the RED16 EDL Type for the AVID EDL Manager but what kind of “Active Setting” I should use? Michael can you give us some advice?
Thanks…

It should just be the File_16 EDL template. It has been renamed a few times over the past few versions so some may have it as Red16, Char16, et. In latest releases, it got the generic name of File_16 and there is another one for File_32 that supports SI2K and other longer named sources.

Other than that, it is a pretty straighforward EDL - Active Settings is only referencing the options available to you. In the case of RED workflows, it will most likely be START timecode and TC1 (record side) and the default Tape/Source.

A sequence with nothing but straight cuts will look like this:

TITLE: REDCINE_X
FCM: NON-DROP FRAME
001 L075_C001_1209RV V C 12:48:52:00 12:48:57:00 01:00:00:00 01:00:05:00
002 L075_C001_1209RV V C 12:49:11:00 12:49:17:00 01:00:05:00 01:00:11:00

All right… now it worked a bit better but finally I have the same problem as Michael -- it didn't autorelink and I have to relink each clip by hand.

I sent some sample EDL's to RED and they are looking into it.

Fow what it's worth Michael, you will need to use the 32 character template(File_32), and everything will relink a treat.

The 16 character template is not enough, as it chops the original clip name in spanned clips. For instance, the name: A020_C002_01074N_004 contains 20 characters and will be chopped to A020_C002_01074N by EDL manager.

Unfortunately, that's not enough for RedCineX to fully resolve the name(s) and link to original clip(s).

Makes me wonder, who at Avid created the template and what for exactly?

Ok guys, about conforming: the currently RCX build 351 imports FCP XML with one extra frame per clip, this is a trouble for long timelines.
I've managed a workaround.
1 In FCP export an EDL and XML
2 Import the EDL into RCX and when RCX asks for EDL settings set the timecode source out to EXCLUSIVE (this is crucial or it won't work)
3 RCX will import your timeline correctly, then grade the clips and render
4 In Clipfinder run conform on FCP XML, set as XML input file the XML that you have previously exported from FCP and choose a name for the XML output file.
Don't check "replace clips with ..." and check the other options. Adjust the sequence with your clips resolution and run conform.
5 Import the new XML into FCP.
Now you will have a new FCP timeline with the clips exported from RCX. Wow!

Must be something else… on my PC the clips still don´t autorelink

Hi Chris,

As it works consistently for me, here are my import settings for EDL(CMX3600)-(you can change this in Preferences>Import):
-Original R3D data directory = your target folder with R3D media
-TC = Absolute
-Destination = Timeline or Active Bin
-Relinking = Replace with Slug
-Timecode SourceOut = Inclusive
-Prompt on Import = Disabled

The only other thing that I can think of, is that in my case, I worked directly with clips(.RDC) located at the top level of the media directory.

Win7 Pro 64bit, RedCineX 351, Avid MC5.0.3, EDL Manager 27.0.3

It works --- YES!!!!!!!!!!! Great - this is quid exciting…

Thanks a lot Bogdan for your explanations … that helped.

„Relinking = Replace with Slug“ is the option to choose…

I found out that is does not matter if you use the RED16 or File_32 template to generate the EDL – both work.

Alright, got XML imported into RCX 351 and individual cut-up clips rendered out... now what? How do I relink back to FCP? I can't just "Reconnect Media" in FCP because now one offline ProRes Proxy is 5 cut-up smaller ProRes 4444 files, differently named. It seems there should be something in RCX that regenerates an XML with the exported footage, or am I missing something?

Thanks!
sam

It seems that 'RCX2XML' accomplishes what I requested above... does anyone know if there is a way to do the same thing with Clipfinder (which I already own)?

Thanks!
