  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How Many Of You Planning A Movie Theater Feature On The 8x Fixed Scarlet?

You seem so very sure about everything (one might even be tempted to say, arrogantly so). Are you sure about this? That's not the way I have understood it :nono:
LOL!

Terry calling someone else arrogant is just TOO FUNNY. :smile5:

Which order do you remember Terry? Can anyone provide proof either way?

Thanks,

Simon

Ha ha - read back over the 11 posts our friend has made in this thread alone and then perhaps reconsider your defense. Maybe I should be flattered by your comment.

I don't think you'll find me posting things that aren't either my clear opinion or something I know to be fact. If I sound like I am telling others what they should think or the best way to be a DP, then I certainly apologize!! :001_smile:

I will look for some good info about the order of delivery before I fall into your trap, but I have read just about every thread posted here in the last 18 months and I do remember it slightly differently.

I was under the impression that fixed Scarlet was scheduled to follow Epic-X, but that tentative order may have been before Scarlet 35 joined the Epic fold, and it certainly preceded the earthquakes and tsunami in Japan, which, I believe, created additional component shortages for the fixed (lens parts) beyond the 18 mentioned for the other camera models. Of course, I may have misremembered. In any case, I don't recall Red's issuing any recent statements regarding release schedules for Epic-X and -S and the Scarlets other than to notify us that there will be delays of as yet unknown durations.

Well Terry, if you know better then say so fer crying out loud! No I'm not sure - its just what I've gleaned from reading these boards like you, and I can't read everything!

I certainly don't know anything at all for sure ... you'll notice the lack of "Red Team" tag on my posts.

The last I read was this

Its not terribly specific about delivery order. It only mentions it in passing in fact ... but its the last word I read.

As to your statements about my character, sorry if I upset you Terry. Let's just not be personal - OK? Argue the points, and leave your opinion of me out of it please.

Someone asking you to back up what you are saying is not a "trap." If you thought I was full of it, its what you should have done instead of being rude.

Just say what you think you remember, its what I did. If you have better facts - or even if you think you do let's get them out there. If you say it, then maybe we can find a post backing you up! Some detail, like who wrote it or what the thread was about... maybe you saw some nugget in a video clip. <shrug>

I can't back up my position on the delivery order very strongly.

Here is what I do know:

Epic M is shipping, and Epic X would be shipping right now but for the tsunami in Japan.

I also know that Epic S has a lot in common with Epic X - enough commonality that in working on Epic X Red is also working on Epic S.

On the flip side - I know Joseph Hutson got to work with an operational Scarlet Fixed.

That's all I know, for and against my earlier delivery order. You already read what I think it means.

Army of Scarlets getting ready for battle....

Are we getting close? :)

I'd like to believe it, but for all we know those are just bodies and lenses. And monitors. Jim also said that the parts that were missing from Scarlet due to the tsunami were minor but integral parts. Probably like a $500 screw or something.

Yeah ... but I don't really think so. My guess is either that's a special order for a "high end" client, or a set of R&D prototypes - maybe release candidates?

I'd be very surprised if we see any Scarlet ship before Epic X ships in quantity.

Of course - I'm happy to see any new camera models ship from Red ... if we are THAT close, then waiting is in order for many film and video makers for whom 2/3" sensors are acceptable or preferred!

What I want to impress on all of you is that you should be buying your system, not a "DSLR system."
Don't buy DSLR specific accessories. Buy quality cinema accessories. Then you are investing in a quality cinema system. That's the way of the future. Your camera is a thing you will hang off the back of your actual investment in cinema gear.

So ... buy that cinema system ... bit by bit.

With all the right gear ... you can attach a Canon DSLR or an Epic or whatever comes next and get to work.
My post wasn't a direct reply to your's, don't take it personally.
You're right, if one wants to shoot right now and doesn't already own a good cam then it makes a lot sense to buy wisely selected gear that can be used with future cams too. I would probably go the 7d route too. For commercial work i would consider the rental way, a good set of a 5d with prime lenses or even a complete cinema package with a R1 MX aren't that expensive anymore. At least i've found good deals here in germany.

But as i said, i(!) can wait. I don't need anything new right now, i can stay with my good old hdv-cam. ;-)

Also "magic boxes?" Don't get the idea that Red cameras make better pictures magically.
You have to do the work. If you shoot awful pictures on a 7D, then you'll shoot awful pictures on an Epic M. You'll just spend a LOT more money to do so.
I didn't mean it that way... I'm just honoring what RED is packing into their cams. Nope, i'm not expecting a RED camera magically doing the work for me. ;-)

So close to release on what exactly? Are you having secret conversations with Jim?
The only Red cameras you can get your hands on today at any price are Red One M (used) Red One MX and Red EPIC M.
The next thing coming from Red is Epic X, then Epic S ... then the Scarlets.
I thought Scarlet was a 2nd program, not necessary depending on EPIC (but originally sheduled for a releases shortly after EPIC-X).
BTW, when i say "close to release" i'm not having days or weeks in mind. Let it be august or even later, for me, it still would be close enough to not start buying into a anything else.

It has repeatedly been said that the Scarlet program is independent of the Epic program and on its own time line. I expect that which comes first at this point, Scarlet or Epic-S, will be determined by supply chain issues and initial sales orders for Epic-M and Epic-X.

Good to see Scarlet numbers massing.

If I were a betting man, I'd say we'll be seeing Scarlet in our hands by January hopefully...

Scarlet as soon as we can

Scarlet as soon as we can

:coolgleamA: We have a fairly steady stream of productions and have been planning to use the scarlet camera for the past three years.

I want to get them for some broadcast work and other videos we do for clients. Not for theatrical release, although I'd have every confidence in shooting a film for 2K distribution on a fixed Scarlet.

For Feature film. The best will be the interchangeable lenses version not the fixed. you are too limited. no macro pro lense etc.

Adapters and it's not limited. Having a fixed lens is perfect for some types of feature films where speed and flexibility is more important then having the right lens.
I have worked in the camera department for some time and the time it takes even for the smallest changes just drains the energy out of many actors and situations. There are times where something unexpected happened on set and the camera was nowhere near being ready for use. I'm just saying that while I do prefer interchangable, the Scarlet fixed will be perfect for some features. If I do want to make a feature film with an interchangable I rather rent the Epic.

From the closeup shot of a Canon lens scale showing Epic auto focus function, I would say the fixed lens is macro. I am sure the optical quality will be first class as Red's other lenses are and it covers a broader range than most prime sets would. With a wide angle adapter or two to get ultra wide shots the fixed should be quite satisfactory in most respects for any kind of production.

This!

Another reason why I love the Scarlet. I love being able to change lenses for specific shots, but more than 90% of the time I'm shooting the conditions don't allow for me to change lenses.

And to answer the original post, I'd love for some of my shots to make it in a feature, but I doubt that I'll be the one making the entire thing. I'm probably not like most on here, directing, and shooting there own products. I work as more of an editor/graphics guy who also gets to go out on shoots and get the 2nd/3rd angles. So I do plan on having shots from the Scarlet making it in features, but probably not something of my own direction.

Where are you shooting where you wouldn't be able to switch lenses? Also regarding switching lenses regarding actors, how are you supposed to light a scene if taking five seconds to switch a lens messes up their performance?
