  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How many Epic cameras can be synchronized together at one time?

And second question, can different Epic models by synched together? E.g. and Epic-X with a regular (Stage 4) Epic and/or an Epic-S...

I know that two is possible (but maybe not between different varieties), but how high can that go? I'm thinking of applications like this: http://www.breezesys.com/MultiCamera/index.htm

There's 120 Canon EOS cameras on some of those shoots...

Also, I'm wanting to do motion sync, not just the one photograph like those Canon shoots...

If you buy 120 EPICS - I'm pretty sure RED would be happy to sync them for you.

I know you were trying to be funny, but 120 Epic-S bodies is still less expensive than buying 6 Sony F35 cameras. It's not really out of the realm of possibility.

For the use case I have in mind, it's a hell of a lot cheaper than the alternatives that are used today. The usage I'm thinking of (in the fall) would use more like 12-18 cameras, but shooting motion.

Hi Erich,
As long as the camera has T/C in you can sync each one so no upper limit.

If you are talking about controlling them remotely, I guess it depends on how many epics the RedMote can talk to.

I almost got sick a little bit when I thought of what kind of gnarly virtual reality weirdness could be done with a bullet-time/circle-vision rig at between 96-120 fps...

Time for Red-Rocket X or something...

Shhhhhh!

There is no limit. The cameras can sync based on a normal genlock signal.

Yep, if it's got a genlock input you can sync as many units as you like. We use Evertz MSC5600's and DA's at our facility and we run genlock to everything from cameras to decks to edit bays to video servers to our router, etc.

I'd be curious to know what kind of signal the EPIC will sync to. Analog SD blackburst seems like a given, tri-level as well I'm assuming.

HD Tri-level Sync definitely, as that's what Red One works with. SD B&B I'd guess would be highly unlikely as everyone is going HD as a minimum.
