Hey Men,

I want to see how light a RED can get. I do professional videography via a remote controlled helicopter and im trying to figure out how light red can be made? I dont need audio or any bells and whistles.

Does anyone know in pounds how light a decent set up would be?

Thanks.

Dave

thanks but it had no info on weight

At NAB I chatted with the folks from Flying Cam and asked him the same question. He said certainly that Scarlet could be flown and they were working on a setup that would use the Red One, don't know if they have actually done this yet or not.

what will scarlet weigh ? will it be less?

Jim Jannard's most recent estimate (8/4/08) for Scarlet's weight was 4.5 pounds. I believe Epic's weight has been projected as being less than RED One, but more than Scarlet. My guess for Epic would be around 6.5 pounds. RED One weighs 9.5 pounds.

Wouldn't the camera take better images with a lens attached? Might shoot well if it had a battery also. Food for thought.

Mark,

I appreciate your keen insight and the helpful tone. The depth of your camera knowledge is staggering. But I observe the camera in the video is mounted with a lens and is attached to power. I recommend you focus with a tape measure. Food for thought.

As seen on the link provided

http://www.skyreel.com/content/view/12/29/

the SKYREEL RC Chopper, is the lightest configuration for the RED ONE.

Configuring the total weight of such set up it is easy, add the weight of the RED ONE body, that of a RED Brick Battery, and that of the 18-50 RED Zoom.

Or better yet contact Robin, She is great and I'm sure She will answer any Q? you might have about the weight and additional needed support gear for the on flight operation of the RED ONE, such as RC lens control, cables etc.

ciao

OK, didn't mean to upset anyone, my attempt at humor didn't fly. Just looked at the footage again and while I might see the power on the side, I'm still not seeing a lens, but no matter. It looked like they were just trying a weight test with the body only.

However, to your point, I do think that it would be awfully difficult to use a tape measurer with the helicopter. I know that from experience...

The helicopter which hung in the NAB booth this year was custom designed and developed for SkyReel specifically to carry the RED One. It will of course, adapt beautifully to the Epic and Scarlet.

Only two in the world exist, ours and the one we built for RED. The footage on the front page of our site was taken with a previous build of helicopter and not from a RED.

This design/build from concept to completion has taken me less than a year and will carry the RED One comfortably. A fully operational RED One and pan-tilt mount for our helicopters is about 27 lbs.

I can tell you for an absolute fact and from first hand experience that the BERGEN RC which was mentioned earlier in the thread will ABSOLUTELY NOT competently carry a RED One!!! It's not only the 2.5 lb lens that is missing in the picture, a RED brick battery and Data downlink system are also missing.

We will be posting footage shortly from the RED One!

I think Hovercam were interested in testing out our Red in the early days with one of their rigs (not sure which one). Back then we were a bit nervous about powering it off anything except Red batteries so we declined the offer - I don't know whether they got anyone else to do the test but I suppose they must have thought it was possible in the first place weight-wise??

Welcome to REDUSER Noel!

It was an absolute pleasure meeting you and Robin at NAB, and look forward to the possibility of doing some shooting together in the Vegas Sky.

ciao

I thought the last specs for epic was 8 pounds?

DAVE: The red body is 10. The battery must be at least 3. I gather you need some kind of wireless unit? Small lens must be .5. I think thats as basic as it will get unless i missed something.

I wouldn't go saying that there are only two of those helicopters in the world. There may only be two of those custom modifications with the RED logos.

This helicopter is built by a company called MoBB. That helicopter is a modified 'MovieCat TS'.

This Aerial Camera ship comes with a price tag of almost 30K. You can by one from the North American distributor of MoBB helicopters:

I will "go saying there are only two of these helicopters in the world".

Your post would have readers believing I am being misleading or giving inaccurate information. The "Movie Cat" is a completely different helicopter than the SkyReel UAV! We asked MOBB to redesign their "Movie Cat" to make it capable of carrying the RED One, and to this date they are unique. If you look more closely at the pictures you've linked your thread to, you will notice that the rotor system is completely different (it is only a two bladed rotor with a flybar, not robust enough to fly RED Ones competently) and the turbine and belt placement and configuration is completely different! MOBB was involved, but this was a completely custom project. We brought their engineers as well as a JetCat turbine engineer from Germany to build these for us.

I should also point out that I have gutted and completely rebuilt the pan-tilt mount to carry the RED One. The RED buttons are purely cosmetic.

Just a clarification for anyone thinking they can order one of these off the shelf for 30K and fly a RED One. The autopilot systems alone cost $45K per machine.

Feel free to PM me if you need further clarification.

What kind of setup would it take to get 5 pounds lifted in the air...successfully of course.

I know I could lift it with my hands, naturally. :w00t:
