  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How light can RED get? I want to fly one on a remote helicopter!

What kind of setup would it take to get 5 pounds lifted in the air...successfully of course.

I know I could lift it with my hands, naturally. :w00t:

Joseph,

There are many helicopters capable of carrying 5lbs. The most important issue you will face is tuning the payload to remove vibration and unfortunately there's no "magic bullet".

Over 90% of all aerial setups have serious issues with stabilizing their image, including us. Image stability will consume the grand majority of your project. Good luck.

What about using software such as FCS2 to take the shake out? I only have FCS1 currently, so I don't know what it can do, and can't.

I will "go saying there are only two of these helicopters in the world".

Your post would have readers believing I am being misleading or giving inaccurate information. The "Movie Cat" is a completely different helicopter than the SkyReel UAV! We asked MOBB to redesign their "Movie Cat" to make it capable of carrying the RED One, and to this date they are unique. If you look more closely at the pictures you've linked your thread to, you will notice that the rotor system is completely different (it is only a two bladed rotor with a flybar, not robust enough to fly RED Ones competently) and the turbine and belt placement and configuration is completely different! MOBB was involved, but this was a completely custom project. We brought their engineers as well as a JetCat turbine engineer from Germany to build these for us.

I should also point out that I have gutted and completely rebuilt the pan-tilt mount to carry the RED One. The RED buttons are purely cosmetic.

Just a clarification for anyone thinking they can order one of these off the shelf for 30K and fly a RED One. The autopilot systems alone cost $45K per machine.

Feel free to PM me if you need further clarification.

Noel,

I am impressed with your system as it is one of the best designs I have seen to date. I will also say that my Helicams can carry a 27 lb. payload as I have done it several times.

Also an autopilot system is not required to fly it as shown in this clip that was captured under only manual control -

Do you sell your units (and provide training?), or only contract aerial services with your helicam?

Carl,

At present we only provide aerial video acquisition services via both Jet Ranger and Helicam. I could possibly be of more help if I new more about what your goals were. Are you an RC helicopter pilot or have access to one?

Smooth Cam works quite ok, but as soon as the vibration has caused motion blur, you are screwed.

So what kind of RC helicopter do you need to accomplish this 27pound lift setup....thanks for the link, btw, the imagery is sweet

Thanks!

You really need either a turbine or a large twin cylinder gas powered model. Some are looking to electrics and, while they show promise, they need more development and have very short flight times at these payloads. The bottom line is the system needs to be very reliable and as vibration free as possible. I prefer large opposed twin cylinder gas units as the motors are balanced by design and run about a smooth as a turbine when well tuned. I have avoided turbine powered units so far as there is considerably more risk of fire with a turbine in the unlikely event of a crash.

I'm just referring to what I see on their web site. They are using your images on the Mobb MovieCat product page.

"Our Mobb MovieCat TS Skyreel with the team"
"Mobb MovieCat TS in use (www.skyreel.com)"

Hi all,

We have just finished two film shoots using the Red One on our HoverCam's & the images are stunning in 4k.

The first shoot was for a Channel 4 drama super hero sequence which will be out in on TV in the UK in November.

The second shoot is a commercial with horse chase sequences & beauty shots.

We currently only have gyro stabilized pan & tilt but working on the roll now.
Power wise the machine has been uprated & fly fantastically well with the Red One.

As soon as I get permission to release footage I will post a link.

Cheers,
Gifford.
