  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How far is Epic in the tatoo program?

I think RED needs to close this site or block new posts and tell about Epic and Scarlet when it will be ready!:smile5:
A lot of primises borns a lot of speculations! Now we see only speculations!:) I can't bring myself to don't enter on site every day!:smile5:

Indeed Jay,the speculation here and barely constrained wishing almost feels physical. It`s heady stuff..every time i log in these days(at least 10 times a day:-) i half expect to see THE recon post from Jim..

Terry- I completely agree with you. I think Tattoo has begun, but I'm not speculating. I think that because Jarred Land said it:

Correct... The Tattoo Program has already begun, Snake Oil, Lucky, Jackpot, Crackpot and Ghost are all Tattoo cameras that have been built in the last couple weeks. Several more are being assembled, and once Firmware V1.0 is ready, those new Tattoos will be delivered to the selected few that are in the Tattoo program.

Does this means it will come out this year?
I'm sure Red wants & hopes so.

Thanks for the clarification!! I thought I had seen something explicit but with all the pondering about "when will it start" on this site, I thought I was crazy or dreaming. So, now we can at least all agree to stop asking "When will Tattoo begin?" :thumbup1:

Given all that has happened, it has to be said that things are actually going along pretty well. That post suggests Tattoo has been about 3 1/2 months so far and it feels like a lot has been accomplished - including a bug kill. How much more validation will they need? Nobody outside of RED knows but I think things are actually looking pretty good.

I think so too. I wouldn't rule out October this year for the first batch of Stage II e-mails.

Came across this video from IBC this year.

Ted talks about Contagion being the big film for Epic and "once we go through that process, and of course learn alot" ... "and then when we're ready it'll go out into mass release" We've learned in the last couple days Contagion will not end up being shot on Epic. At the end he says they will be available "as soon as they are ready and working. they're very close. we're working in the lab ... functioning"

I don't want to add to the rampant speculation but definitely some interesting words from someone official at Red. They're obviously working hard; and hopefully Contagion isn't as big of a setback in actuality as it feels to those of us with no information looking in from the outside.

I hope, and want Pedersen's & Gibby's comments to be true and spot on. My original guess was that Stage 2 would start in October, but it looks like that will probably not happen. This comment from Ted seems to say that Tattoo has not begun yet, which is contrary to Jarred's earlier comment that it had begun.

Ted's Quote:
"And I did not mention any start dates for Tattoo or stage 2, that has not been determined yet - just that Steven Soderbergh is prepping now to go out on the first movie to be shot with Epics, and we will learn much from that, just like the first time around when he took the RED ONEs onto the Che movies, and we will have some info after that."

I know all things are subject to change- and I'm hoping they do, as I'm itching to get my hands on my stage 2 camera before years end ...

There is I think a distinction between the development testing cycle of the Tattoo program, where a hand full of prototypes are passed around and then returned to Red for the next cycle of improvements, and the eventual delivery of the first finished production cameras to Tattoo participants, the ones they will own, just prior to stage 2. They are somewhere along the curve of that process that started as Jarred indicated some months ago.

Agreed. I've said it before... TATTOO doesn't start until Mark gets to take his first Epic home for keeps. And I can't see why he wouldn't be allowed to share pics and info when he gets it.

I think we increase illusions! What a October? How can it be? October in two weeks! It is impossible! be realist! Tatoo even didn't begun! And Even if Tatoo begins today Tatoo needs 2-3 months! Then 2-3 months for deleting bugs! Then Stage 2 - 2-3 months! Then Stage 3 - 2-3 months!
So it is if today begings! And if Tatoo begins in 1,2,3 months? I think the real date is Stage 2 (real stage 2) in spring-summer 2011! Stage 3 - autumn 2011! And Stage 4 - spring 2012! It the best way as for me! And we even don't know if Epic is how much ready in general! I think a lot of problems left with prototype! As I think of course! Let's see! I think just need to wait for january 2011! I think we will get some news from red before NAB and all information we will get on NAB!

I lose all of my funding in 2011. If I don't get to upgrade to Epic this year, I don't get to upgrade to Epic. Sucks. Now I'm wondering what I should buy with my $80,000 if I can't get the Epic upgrade and several Scarlets.

Should I just order an Alexa? Should I get more 5D MkII? 7D? Come November, If I can't pay for a camera and have it delivered by Dec 28th, I have to look elsewhere.

As Jarred said the Tattoo program began last spring. All of the participants in the Tattoo program you can bet have had some hands on, maybe even extensive hands on, with factory prototypes during this shakedown period. When the Tattoo participants finally get their own personal cameras, that will be at or near the end of the program, not the beginning. Hence the hints from Mark and Gibby. There is not a very large group of people involved and per Red's shift in policy to a less open sharing of the process, they have been very secretive about it.

I often work with government and educational clients with appropriated funding and if they don't use it, they lose it. It sucks. Without knowing your situation, what if you were to put your funding toward good lenses or other hardware that will hold its value and be usable regardless of what camera(s) you end up with?

$80K can equate to one very nice RED One MX kit with ample accessories and some nice glass.

Following this discussion has certainly become a great representation of "the telephone game." The major difference is that, in this case, no one is whispering anything. It's all being printed here in black and white. Still, people have a very serious predilection toward putting their own spin on things. I may be guilty of that but I have tried to rely only on what has been stated by RED.

I am not sure where it was decreed that "TATTOO doesn't start until Mark gets to take his first Epic home for keeps." but I am not at all sure that it makes any sense. To start with, as noted above, it has been stated clearly that Tattoo HAS ALREADY BEGUN. It has been made pretty clear that Tattoo is for testing and debugging. While I'd guess that 95% or more of that "debugging" is in software, it also means that there is no guarantee that any Tattoo camera won't be brought back in at any time for "fixes" and updates. If Tattoo doesn't begin until Mark gets a camera he can keep, either Mark risks owning a buggy camera or Tattoo isn't about testing after all.

As for Ted not saying anything about the start of Tattoo, I interpret that pretty literally. He didn't say anything; changing nothing said by others. It only says that Ted is not attaching a date to it, i.e. he is staying out of the discussion and out of "trouble."

I say it again, Tattoo is well underway; 3+ months worth. When it will end, no one can absolutely say for sure. Folks within RED have the best information but they aren't talking. Some time after Tattoo ends, Stage 2 will begin and these folks will be getting their Epics. If you believe the talk of 2012, you probably are just as likely to accept the premise of the movie 2012.

RED going more or less silent usually (historically at least) seems to indicate big things going on behind the curtain. Stage 2 around the corner?

Another clue was when Jim said they had TONS of engineering footage (when asked to release HDRx footage) but he didn't want to put anything out until it was "knock-your-socks-off" polished... or something to that effect. Jim is obviously alpha/beta tester #1 and he has referred to his camera as a Tatoo model as I recall.

"Everything is subject to change" is sufficient cover to declare the Tattoo program at a camera-release stage anytime they choose. I assume the issue is finalizing firmware. For my nickel, they can send my camera now with basic functions and fix any other problems in (firmware) post.

I'm in somewhat of the same boat. I don't "lose my funding", but with a new facility currently under construction once it comes time to outfit with the technologies I'm going to have to buy whatever is available.

I have no problem patiently waiting, unfortunately once that deadline comes around if I can't get an Epic I'm going to be forced to pick something else and I won't have that money that could have gone towards an all-Red setup.

With that said, I know the Red team is working hard to make it happen ... so I'll keep being patient and holding my breath for any new news on the Epic front. I'm still holding on to hope that what was mentioned in the Q&A thread back in July will still hold true:

Current RED One owner and submitted for stage 2!

Just broke ground on our new facility doing live/studio and really hoping to utilize as many as 12 Epics. I know to ask for release dates are unrealistic. However, being on a deadline with our facility slated to be finished around Feb/Mar of next year is it realistic for us to plan on getting that many Epics?
No problem.

Jim
