  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How far is Epic in the tatoo program?

Mark knows what we don't- and he's probably been gagged since saying those few short words.
I think there have been many clues to the cameras coming out sooner that most think.
I am still guessing that the Tattoo program changed from what it originally was and has been undergoing extensive testing for some time now.
I don't think Red is shipping much new stuff (like the EVF bomb) because when Epic X is released, they want to have everything in great quantities.
This is my guess- reading between the lines of those at Red...

Red had about 2000 backorders for the old EVF that Bomb shipments will have to fill before new orders get shipped. From what they have posted they are shipping Bomb EVF's as fast as they can turn them at this point, but production is still ramping up slowly.

On the bright side, a problem found and put behind is one less problem in the road ahead. Isn't that what the Tattoo program is all about?

Look.. I like Mark. But he doesn't know when Epic's coming out.. Hell... JIM doesn't know when Epics are coming out. Jim WANTED them out months ago, but that did not happen. This is the curse of development. It's ready when it's ready. RED said the EVFs were shipping two months ago.

I'm not complaining.. Just saying that everyone is working hard to make the day happen, but right now, the specifics of that day remain a mystery... To everyone.

We'll know whey they are really close. One small hint will be that you see pics of EPIC with ALL it's modules and a working REDMote. Then you will know they are close.

OK: Mark will get his Epic this year, and rest of the Proletariat in 2011.

How am I going with my guess, Mark?

I agree with Mark:

Wrong...guess again :)

Last I checked, YOU have a BOMB EVF... The rest of us? Not so much.

Hmm...the rest of us? I own a Bomb EVF too...

I'm just purely guessing too Jay - but in the case of Epic shipping I'm guessing your guess is wrong :)

IF it's a fact that Soderbergh is unable to shoot on Tattoo this month, that definitely means things are slipped out even further. That's more than fine with me. If that article is correct, then Tattoo hasn't and can't begin this month. So best case it begins in October, 2-3 months of Tattoo (at best), we'd be looking at a late December Stage II drop at an outside chance of maybe. No complaints here, I'm loving MX, loving the RPPs, working on scripts! I love the Red train, happy to be onboard.

What is Tattoo, Anyway?

Using this thought as a jumping off point, I can't help but make an observation. There has been much discussion o the forum that talks about when the Tattoo program will begin. Here's my take.

Originally, Tattoo sounded like a fairly robust plan for a first tier of cams to go out to the "hard core." I assumed that would probably be at least a few dozen cameras. Later, it seemed to me that Jim sort of shuffled the Tattoo idea and suggested it would be somewhat scaled back to, these are my words, the "inner circle." The difference, IMO, was a pragmatic change for Jim to get what he needed out of a testing phase without the larger "overhead" of too many cooks in the kitchen.

Along the way, again just from my perspective, it seemed to me like there were hints that this scaled back Tattoo program had actually begun. I don't recall any brass band, press conference or banners but there were some references along the way. At the risk of being thumped for "misinformation" I, like most others here, haven't gone out of my way to reference Tattoo but I do actually think it has begun and the stuff we are hearing and reading about is all part of it. It just doesn't seem to make sense that there would be all this "insider" activity - Pederson, Soderbergh, et al - and then, when that's over, start a Tattoo program. Again, just my opinion and my logic.

Bottom line, for me, is this - when all this "stuff" with Contagion and Jim shooting HDRx™™ and Mark Pederson teasing us all with hints (gotta love it!)... when all this is over, there will be a period of silence (and it may be a painful one as it will seem ungodly long), then Stage 2 will begin and the first batch of Epics will start to ship.

There, I said it. I think Tattoo is all around you. :thumbup1: (Did I say loudly enough that this is just my take!!)

I think Epic must be vetted on a real movie before the Tattoo program can "end". Soderbergh was the pony I was betting on to do this. I'd expect to see the camera slog through a day-in, day-out challenging schedule, multi camera shoot. We've not only watched the paint dry, but age, yellow and crack again. Anybody have any groundtruth on this development?

Ahem - Mark's company makes real movies.

And, as far as I can tell, Gibby's company makes real TV shows which will put the camera in harsher environments for longer periods of time than most movies. Those guys wouldn't be able to say even these tease-y little comments if RED didn't ok it - if the radio silence is ending, that is a good thing. Gibby especially has been remarkably quiet, so if he is lifting the veil to give us the slightest glimpse behind the curtain, that is a good sign. A really good sign.

Meanwhile, one little gossipy, ambiguous paragraph in an article by someone no one knows sends everyone into a tailspin, oh my.

The hitch on Contagion may not be a camera problem but lack of the necessary modules to configure the cameras for that type of production. In short an mfg/production supply problem, not a tech issue. Be nice to get some more news on exactly where they do stand.

Yeah. If I'm not mistaken Che used 8GB Lexars that were readily available. So the cards didn't need to be reused. Maybe the bond wouldn't let the use of SSDs if there were not enough media available. Maybe they consider reusing media too risky...
