  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How does RED feel about making a 35mm DOF adapter?

The cream of the crop in 35mm DOF adapters seems to be the Letus Ultimate. RED has always held out the carrot on the stick by offering super high quality cinema solutions for unheard of pricing.

So I ask,

With Scarlet (Body Only) entry level 2/3" cam, I would think many would want to throw a DOF adapter on that.. so will RED make one?

A super high quality, straight barrel (no prism flip), spinning ground glasss DOF adpater, with Backfocus adjustment and Uni-mount adapter rings for ANY lens.... at .. well... Half the price of Letus? (In the RED tradition)

And add a switch on the Scarlet that flips the menus and LCD output so no image flipping is necessary in the Adapter (ie less light loss).

because here is the deal.... These new DSLR's are getting full frame sensor 1080/24p real soon.. so the only thing left is the aquisition format (H264? blows ) .. so RAW and the company support is what you are paying for, and its hard to tell if that is worth it.... when one is not making their sole living as a DP. (And if they were, they would be using something better)

So it would be nice to see barebones RED stuff.. that still kicks butt... but the idea that you can get into a RED that will do even more for say another $2k adapter.

My thoughts are that the DLSR market cannot change the aquisition format to RAW or the market would kinda fold up on itself... you would have a truly cinema capable product for $3k.

RED designing, building, and distributing 35mm adapters would just be redundant in my opinion, because they are already offering S35 and FF35 scarlet's. If that kind of DOF is what you are looking for invest in one of those, because with the price you would have to pay for the 2/3 brain plus the adapter you wouldn't really be saving any money. plus you'd be loosing a ton of resolution considering you'd be able to get 5K or 6K resolution out of the S35 and FF35 models.

Can't see the point in degrading Scarlet 3k images with a DOF adapter. Spend the money on good fast 16mm lenses instead. You can get the same DOF characteristics on 2/3", which is way better than 1/3" and /1/4" video camcorders anyway, by shooting 2 stops more open on aperture.

Um no. There's no point in a DOF adapter- that's what RED's cameras are. It would be like asking Ferrari to make an engine for Toyota- whyyyy?

Thx for the quick responses.

My intial thought is that it would be redundant.
And second, just wondering what would happen if one of those DSLR's went to 24p RAW aquisition format with a $2500 body? I guess it would be competing directly with the entry level Scarlet at that point.

But yes, I get it... no point in sacrificing the image in the RED world , for any reason.

Adapters make more sense for 1/3" sensor cameras where you have the equivalent of 4.5-stops more depth of field over S35. The difference in DOF between 2/3" and S35 is a practical 2.5-stops, which is a lot more manageable by using fast lenses at wide apertures.

which are the fast lenses right now available in market for 2/3?

Well, for 2/3" 3-CCD B4 mounts, there are the Zeiss Digi-Primes which are T/1.6 to T/1.9. T/1.6 gets into the maximum aperture possible for a prism-block design.

If the 2/3" single-sensor camera uses a PL-mount, there are many fast PL-mount lenses, some T/1.3, some even faster. There are also smaller Super-16 lenses that are T/1.3.

Oh. A full frame, full manual, 24p, RAW codec Canon DSLR would be competing with much more than an entry level Scarlet. You can count on that.
