How critical is it to use Full debayer when things are going to 2K?

I'm just wrapping up a short film I graded yesterday. When I'm using full debayer, I've had trouble with some "Power house" stuff popping up, thus leaving black frames in the .mov or .dpx.. However, if I use half premium debayer, I have no issues like this.

It was shot in 4K, but final delivery will be 2K or 1080p. How much does it really count to use full vs. half good?


I might be blind, but I can't honestly see much difference - but then again, I'm hooked on this "get it right" thing. I'm sure you understand.


If rendering from full debayer is super important - what can I do to get rid of the "power house" messages?

Ultimately its your call, and you have to trust your eyes.

The question I'd ask is 2K or 1080p for what sort of playback environment?

As you evaluate how close is your evaluation environment to your intended delivery environment?

For theatrical, then I'd use the best settings and figure a work around for the problem footage. Maybe I'd drop to half good if that works for your eyes on the problem segments.

For broadcast or BluRay I'd just use half good and call it a day. It's very hard for even trained eyes to see the difference during full motion playback on a 50" Plasma display 6 feet (2m) so its not worth the hassle.

What you do NOT want to do is evaluate your work on a 50" Plasma (or worse a 24" production monitor) and deliver for theatrical. If theatrical is your goal, then get a projector. What is almost impossible to see on the 50" plasma might be a disaster on a 50 foot screen.

It also depends on picture quality and subject. If You have plenty of thin horizontal lines, regular textures (brickwalls and so on) and perfect-sharp focus - it's better to render fullres premium cause 2k is pixel to pixel 4k halfresed. Otherwise use halfres premium.

I forgot about Powerhouse decoder error after 7.1.1 upgrade - what version do you use? What raid - 0, 10 or 50?

I have a theatre with a Christie CP2220 projector available, but at a certain cost. The client can't/won't spend that kind of cash for this project, and I'm not willing to offer my cut just so the client can go haywire in the theatre. So in this case - that's not an option. However, it's going for the big screen since they want a 2K master of it.


No bricks, no horizontal lines, nothing like that. Mostly interiors, close up on faces and a little bit exterior with grass and some trees. I haven't noticed any aliasing trouble.


I'm on Resolve 7.1.1. RAID0. I have external drives for backup, and an external RAID0 as well.


Guess I'll have to try and troubleshoot which clips makes the Power house decoder trouble then.
