  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How can edit on a 4k timeline in Premier and display to a 1080P monitor in real time?

The AJA Kona 3g?

Heh... I called BMD about this and they were all ...."well yeah... you're monitor is 1080 right? Of course you can't port a 4k timeline to it" I have heard that the AJA card will do just this thing... sample down to your viewing monitor, I can't confirm that, tho. The Rocket will not do what you want, it only displays via RedCine-X, not Premier.

Good luck,
CB

Customers can also edit in 4K and output in 1080p.

This info is from bmd on the decklink extreme 4k.

And does it work on your system?

I have not find any settings for it. The picture is rolling fast from top to bottom. Perhaps its cause i use a 4k sequens and not a quad hd. Will try this but it would be very annoying if this was the case. 4k is 4k and not quad hd!

edit: did no even get a picture in quad hd mode.

I cant belive there is no reduser that works with premiere in a 4k timeline and outputs to a 1080 ref monitor using the bmd decklink 4k extreme.

Or in after effect with a 4k comp. Its no realtime playback on rampreview with the decklink.

BMD says:
As far as I know, Pr will not be able to downconvert the 4k to timeline into HD formats. I do not remember a function in Pr where you can select to output the 4K timeline into HD.

The downscaling output in AF is basically a software base downconvertion which we can not control because this is an Adobe I/O function that allows AF to send the output signal to our card in that way.

Does the 4k timeline and output to hd work in avid or fcpx? curios

I have edited a Red (4k) timeline and exported the signal HD-SDI thru my Kona 3 to my Panasonic engineering monitor with no problems. Never tried it with BMD hardware. I dont care for their stuff.

Tom, did you change a setting somewhere in premiere or does it just work?
I loved my kona lhe until aja closet its door. Cool I did not know that kona 3 did do this! I heard rumors of this thoe.

I sold off both my BM and AJA cards since mostly they were being used for capturing... and that doesn't happen much anymore. In my CS6 setup I am currently using a 3GB 660Ti GPU card that allows for a three monitor setup. So I have maximized my third monitor to show me as large an image as possible. This gives me the ability to have a 4k timeline and watch it 'very close' to 1920x1080 which is the native size of my monitor. I realize this is not 10bit but works very well!

Joel, I installed the most recent Kona 3 drivers and it just works with PrP CS6.03 on my PC.

Paul, the Kona 3 allows you to view the HD- SDI signal on an engineering monitor and output to tape if need be. This is much more preferable to making CC or QC judgements from computer monitor display generated by a graphics card.

Cant you post images on redusern anymore without an url?

Joel - did you ever get the Blackmagic 4k Extreme card working? I'm looking into buying a brand new system and was eying this card, but if I can't cut in 4k and monitor in 1080 it isn't worth it.

No I did not. I have been mailing back and forth with bmd and they dont know!!??! Nobody can answer me. This crazy!!!! I even uploaded them a clip to try out after they suggested it. And yes I feel like a sucker buying this card over the old.

Its not cool they announce new stuff all the time while not taking care of what is out. Its better they focus more on customer support!

I just wanted to add a little more info to this.

After mailing, and waiting, mailing back and forth BMD finally did test to with 4k timeline in premiere with a 4k clip I send them. Did get the same problem and responded.

Thanks for point this out,
I am sorry but the information on the press page is not equivalent to a tech spec or support note - the press article does not cover technical aspect or feature compatibility in-depth.
Unfortunately I do not not whether this feature would be release in a future firmware update or not, however I will report this to my manager.

And today a mont or two later I get this answer.

I have been keeping an eye on this, and I have also tested the latest driver with your file, but unfortunately this feature has not been release just yet.
I have sent a reminder to my manager, so that he can check whether there is any update. I will keep you posted.
Thanks again for your patience.

I just think that If I read something from bmd site it should be truth? Peter, cant you get the manager of his but and tell us when this feature is coming!!

Perhaps somebody else got other info on this?

Honestly, I would be fine if it just sent a still from my 4k timeline out to my display so I can at least do color work. Playback isn't as critical, that works on my secondary display in full screen just fine.

Yes. Using a 4K Seiki as a client preview monitor @3840x2160p with Premiere- works great!!!
Did you mean that your instead of 1080p timeline editing in 4k timeline and outputting one 4k feed to clients seiki and one to our 1080p referens monitor?
Did you use bmd converter box from sdi to hdmi? Have you tried to run 25p on the Seiki?
