  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

How can edit on a 4k timeline in Premier and display to a 1080P monitor in real time?

This is kind of a strange issue...somewhat ignorant but is it necessary to use a dedicated card for external monitors? I use mostly FCP X and After Effects if things get really heavy...I use my Intensity Shuttle for output sometimes but does it take stress off the GPU or something? I mean if thats the case then I'm all for it! Although my Intensity Shuttle doesn't play nice with TV sets that don't have native 24p and playing 24p back on a 60i set with no pull down is pretty nasty :O Looks nice for still sections when I just need to grade though.

What platform are you on? Does the 4K monitor play back smoothly at 24fps?

Are you running your program/preview at 1/2, 1/4, 1/16 for playback and 1:1 for paused?

Heh... I called BMD about this and they were all ...."well yeah... you're monitor is 1080 right? Of course you can't port a 4k timeline to it" I have heard that the AJA card will do just this thing... sample down to your viewing monitor, I can't confirm that, tho.

I can confirm that dusty old AJA Kona3 cards are perfectly able to downscale native RED R3D Premiere sequences (at least 3840x2160 4K HD) out through 1080p SDI, to an external monitor in realtime.

It's insanely frustrating that a brand new card like the Decklink Extreme that bills itself as supporting "4K" does not support a critical feature like this.

I am really enjoying editing my projects on a 4k timeline but am not sure how to get this workflow to display video on my video monitor. I have a Black Magic Intensity Pro card but it only works when I am editing the footage on a 1080 timeline. Is there any card that will do this in real time? Does the Red Rocket do this? I can't seem to get a clear answer on this.

Use port #2 on any dual output graphics card (which means pretty much any PCI graphics card) That simple.
