  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hot swap options?

Would be the best solution.
 
How big physically would a capacitor be to provide enough power to run a camera for, let's say 10 seconds, while you hot swap? Even a tiny li-ion battery built into a battery plate that give enough time to do simple hot swaps would be wonderful.

10 Seconds isn't enough. You need that extra 3-5 minutes of "just in case" power to get a battery in case there isn't one on hand.
 
Hot swapping is sorely missed with the DSMC2 body. I think Movecam was coming out with a module soon. I checked about a month ago but it wasn't available yet.

If your battery plate has a P-Tap on it, you can just connect a male to male P-tap from another battery into a P-tap slot, then swap out your main battery. While the two batteries are both connected (one on the mount and one via P-Tap, the system runs in parallel. When we do it, the 1st AC has a small flatpack battery with the male to male P-Tap cable always ready and the whole battery swap takes about 15 seconds with no shutdowns.

Paul, very clever work around, but within a mature camera eco-system work arounds as basic as this should be unnecessary. DSMC1 had a beautiful hot swap solution, DSMC2, and nothing's even being talked about.
 
The advantage of the P-Tap swap system is that your follow focus and transmitter don't go down with a switch either. With the sidehandle battery system they would.

How's that? I do this all the time but the power ports on battery plates don't work unless there's a battery on them. So accessories go down.
 
I soldered a 4pin lemo cable with two ends, Dtap and JST connector. JST is widely used in the gimbal/drone world. Movi Ms, Gremsy
Then a small and lightweight LiIon/LiPo battery (same that I use for my gimbal) will serve as a buffer battery. You can use any 4S battery.

Once your V-battery runs low, you connect the Jst end from your lemo cable to Jst of buffer battery. Then unplug Dtap and swap V battery. Once V battery is back on Vmount plate, unplug Jst connector until next cycle.
I know, if you are not familiar it sounds complicated. But in fact it is very simple.

I have 4x spares of those LiIon batteries with 50Wh on set. This gives me roughly 4x 40min for hotswap. Plenty for a whole day shoot.

Zero costs, only 10min for soldering and assembly cable lenght.

Again, super clever.....But we're talking cutting edge camera systems here. Is this what Red wants to see as their hot swapping solutions going forward? No plans from Red to come up with a small lightweight module to accommodate a task which happens multiple times during every shoot day, for all it's users?
 
I really like the scatter box, but if I remember correctly, you need a AB/ V lock battery on the camera and it helps with swapping a 4pin XLR. Can you hot swap between AB batteries without a AC/Block battery as well?

Of course, we all want cutting edge and elegant solution.
However, as long as there is none, I make my own workable solution instead of waiting. And it cost me nothing.
 
I've been looking for a solution for months but it wasn't until recently I found something. Hopefully this will help others in the same situation:

I saw a sleek looking one from Tilta several months back but can't seem to find any information on it, even on their official website. It could be a TiltaMax kit only thing or possibly exclusive to the China market?
 
It's a lifesaver...and the best quality since BlueShape uses only the best cells on the market and they have multiple protection circuits and these are tough too! ;)
