Hi All

I know this debate comes up every so often so i thought i would start it again.

What is the best combination of IR pollution protection around for Epic right now? I have read many articles and am split between the Tiffen water white hot mirror/ ir nd set ( really expensive)

or the Schneider Platinum series.

I currently own the regular set of PV size Schneider (.3, .6, .9, 1.2, 1.5) with the matching hot mirror, but i am noticing on my super speeds at T1.3 with 1.2 + .9 and a hot mirror in front that the blacks are still quite reddish.

Will the Tiffen series be any better than this?
 
Make sure to test Schneider Platinums before investing in them. I have seen some strange stuff happen with those, in particular the 1.8. YMMV

It's good but it only tests one scenario really. For example, the issue I saw with the platinum 1.8 was in daylight and it was gray pants that were not registering correctly.

Also, the able test is over a year old. There are other NDs and IRNDs that have come on the market.

I have seen those tests but what i havent seen is the new Tiffen ND's with in built hot mirror and IR cut.

Steve i have heard the same thing thats why i started this thread to see if anything new was out there like the Tiffen series. Mind you at $3400 a set they are the most expensive IR filters on the market
 
i find it hard to believe there are so few opinions on this!

I would also like to know if people are still using both the IRND combo with a Hot mirror on a Dragon as i don't want to invest in something that i won't need soon. Hopefully the new OLPF as the hot mirror coating built in
 
Platinum IRNDs are not too bad - few problems, but it's good to add a Formatt hot mirror for really bad heat and cheap fabrics and very high ND levels.

You have to re-white balance for green cast - but how easy is that?

Red One and Epic each have different IR characteristics.

Agree that 1.8 can be a little odd. But up till 1.5 its' pretty solid.

Mirror based solution reflect light back onto the set, can be very distracting to actors, and work poorly with wider angles.
 
Avoid Schneider Platinum IRNDs for MX sensor at all costs. I use Rosco Trucolor IR filter with regular Tiffen NDs and I get perfect results.
 
Not a fan of the combo filters because they have a fixed amount of compensation that may, or may not, suit a particular situation. I hate adding more glass to the optical path but at least with a separate hot mirror I have true flexibility. I have been happy with the Schneider 750 Tru-Cut Hot Mirror in terms of results, though the point about flashing that bounce around set and into actors eyes is well taken.

Really looking forward to the Dragon with the latest OLPF as early testing (thanks Phil) shows it controls IR quite well on its own.

So does the dragon still need a hot mirror or can I use normal nd's and irnd's I don't want to waste money if the dragon is fine with straight nd's
 
Tiffen ir .3 stop hot mirr top filter on my list to buy for 350 dollar
