Hi Guys,

I just purchased my first Cine lens and PL Mount from RED online store. I'm getting the Battle-Tested 18mm RED Pro and the PL Mount. I'm very excited because I will get to see what working with actual 4K Cine footage looks like.

Actually recently I purchased a discontinued Canon L 24-70 EF and a Ziess 18mm for about $1,400 each. What I would like to know is what are the benefits of working with a PL Cine? Bigger crop on the sensor? Or just smoother mechanisms?

I am already stunned with the quality of the these lens over the lens I had lens than $600, so I'm thinking the lens that is double the cost of 1.4k would be amazing. Even it's it's not, I'm still happy to be on par with general indie 4k productions.

Ok, how bout this.

Is it really all that simple to change the mount? All I have to do is unscrew and replace the Canon mount with the TI PL Mount? 4 Screws?

BTW, Fedex accidently sent my lens to another state. I paid for over night so RED is sending another tomorrow.

It is really that simple, and the RED 18mm is really that cool.

nJoy!

Sorry but this has nothigh to do with this thread but I have not reliazed that you changed your avatar. Nice haircut!

Not to disappoint you but picture vice the lens will preform quite similar to a Canon EF L 18mm.
The build is of course more sturdy, so you can have a big clip on matte box and also your follow focus will run great on the lens and not cause the picture to move or such which I find to be quite an issue on small poor built still glass.
But, the Red 18mm and the rest of the red primes are quite big. Not to easy on the shoulder and you will find that since the lens is heavy you might get into trouble if you wan to pull focus yourself if not on a tripod or such... So basically the lens is built for Follow Focus and has longer focus swing than EF lenses and it allows the use of a fully fledged matte box, and if you use primes, and especially big once you kind of very much need a AC as well.

You will probably love it, but my advice is to rent before you buy then you know what you can expect.

Bjorn,

Thanks for your input. These are all very helpful and real concerns. I'm also glad that you acknowledge the issue with a heavy lens and the concerns it may cause with the Follow Focus.

To clarify my Canon 18mm was only $300 but I recently got a discontinued 24-70mm for about 1,300 from B&H. It's great. I was so impressed with the upgrade in quality that a better lens can make that I got the Zeiss 18mm for about the same price.

It's phenomenal. So to push the quality even further I got the RED Pro 18mm BT and the PL Mount. I wanted to uprade to the PL mount genre of professionalism. I like the quality of the image. It's a faster lens. Great aperture setting. I like setting t-stops manually. Moreover, I seem to get more close ups with depth that I never tried with my other 18mm lenses. As you say the Follow-Focus is very smooth. And, i like the way it looks on the camera.

i feel like I have a full RED camera now. I don't have any intentions to by my RED Prime, I just wanted to own one. If I need to shoot cine I will rent the lenses.

Again Thanks.

Is that a zoom controller mounted on the right side? If so, what make/model? I'm looking for some kind of zoom control for my Canon lenses on our Scarlet.
