  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Holiday Update + IPP2 Preview Build

Corey I believe next update will have this, I asked the same question basically and was told next update. This is just a band aid. I also work in mixed lighting conditions so I need raw preview myself.

Awesome! I cant wait for it to be perfected. The sensor is amazing.

Absolutely, it has saved my but on some questionable white balance situations, ever looking for second cam, I'm an event dude in nj. It's all I shoot

I do a lot of events and weddings. I have a feature film in April/May.

Will the Helium ever reach a point to where the dragon is now? Like hitting the RAW preview on and off and dragoncolor2 is automatically applied and the color is perfect. I am hoping for a helium color where it would identical to how we used the dragon.

Colour under the IPP2 system is vastly improved over the old (like DragonColor) way of doing things. As we advance the image processing (and other aspects of camera design) they will by necessity not work the way things used to. As long as that's a consequence of real improvements, I hope that people will understand. IPP2 is one of those real improvements addressing almost all areas of image quality.

In current cameras the LUT option is not compatible with the raw view. (Not that it's really a raw view). The IPP2 Preview is not an implementation of IPP2 in camera, but the use of the LUT to give the look of IPP2 in camera. We're still working on the full IPP2 implementation that has some interesting features and ways to address this kind of issue.

Thanks for all that. The one thing I wish for would be a way to pipe magnified pixels out some port (SDI or HDMI) so that I can check critical focus during longer (event) shoots. Perhaps the new pipeline will make that possible!

H Michael,

An Odyssey 7Q or Small Hd can do this already & is a better way to monitor fcous. When you press zoom magnify it sends a signal down the SDI pipe which can do strange things such as break genlock & stop recording on an Odyssey 7Q.

Wish I had my Epic-W with my over xmas in Goa. IPP2 sounds like a whole lotta fun to play with right now.

Kudos to Graeme for getting this preview version out b4 Xmas.

All us early Helium sensor owners knew the camera was early doors of development on its release and we jumped the gun & purchased early knowing that red would be developing it further and here we are!

Ugh. I don't care about external recording. I have a SHOGUN and 2:1 magnification of an HD signal is not the same as a 1:1 magnification of 8K. I just want to MONITOR it so that I can confirm CRITICAL FOCUS all day long. If IPP2 somehow works around whatever stopped RED from sending a crop of the 1920x1080 pixels in the center of the sensor, that would make my day.

So in Helium if I understand where I selected dragoncolor2 I will select the IPP2 and instead of redlogfilm I will select redwidecolorgamut?

Easiest to go to the presets menu and pick apply to "IPP2 Preview (Red)" and it'll set it all up right for you.

I was just playing around with the new IPP2 preview again using the 8K helium Footage provide by Mark Toia. I noticed that there was some sort of green banding "Like" areas on the caucasian skin of the female subject after applying the Ipp2 Preview Lut (that was so generously provided by Phil Holland) to the RWG/LOG3g10 settings in Redcine-X pro "One Off" preview. What causes this and can it be fixed with the "Final" implementation of the Helium color Pipeline? Forgive me if this issue has already been addressed.

I used a 16-bit Tiff. file to grade from Redcine-X pro "One off" because the .R3d file could only be imported into Davinci Resolve 12.5.4 without the IPP2 preview lut so only as Redwidegamutrgb-Log3g10.

You can still see some green areas still present after the grade.

To fix this properly you need to update to the most recent firmware to achieve the proper calibration profile for Helium that "solves" the artifact.

IPP2 is a new image processing pipeline and not really related to the green-ish tint across mid-IREs in a given exposure. The firmware is the solution. For the time being you will need to grade the artifact out if it's effected your captured footage.

Phil,

unfortunately, I don't own a Red camera yet especially not a helium. I was just trying to do this entirely with the use of Redcine-X pro since I don't actually have a camera to update with the latest firmware. If the firmware fixes this in camera, I apologize for the post.

Hi Rand, nothing to apologize for. :)

I didn't realize the update would not let us playback with the look or Lut applied. Had a client freak today because in camera playback
was without any look or lut applied and of course was fairly flat.
Managed to explain to the client but had to show him on the computer.

Is playback going to be fixed or can I switch back to using the "old" way with Redcolor / redgama ??????

Forgive me if this has been mentioned before, but is IPP2 available within Resolve too?

And how does it effect Dragon footage? (whether it's Epic Dragon or Weapon Dragon).

thx

No, not yet but you can use the IPP2 LUT within resolve. Set your footage to REDWIDEGAMUTRGB/Log3g10 and apply the IPP2Preview LUT as an output lut. I'm personally enjoying the look of this new improved color pipeline with Scarlet Dragon footage.

There is a lut applied in the update, the issue is you can't turn it off for raw toggle. Sounds like perhaps you did not have the lut loaded some how?
